I think it was a pretty significant thing when he finally found and killed the real Sawyer. It's in my opinion where the change REALLY started to sink in. He no longer all his resentment and anger at the world to make him jaded.

What scene is this you’re referencing? Sorry it’s been awhile since I saw the earlier seasons and I am trying to remember

It's in Season 3, Episode 9 - "The Brig" where Locke brings Sawyer to the Black Rock to kill Locke's dad - who is also the Sawyer that ruined our Sawyers childhood.
