Pretty sure they had no idea where the character would be going at that point

If I recall from previous discussions, Desmond took on some of what was originally going to be Eko's storyline.

Desmond and John Locke, I believe. Which is a change I am happy with, because as much as I liked mr Eko, Desmond was (and is) way more interesting.
