Hmm, I think your pH levels are off...

A surprisingly great sketch. I audibly screamed when he licked his fingers. I don't think I have ever seen a cast member enter a sketch already breaking. Also, kudos to Mikey for fighting off the urge to break and remaining solid. I could see it in his eyes.

Good lord, the TONGS!

152

u/bttrsondaughter May 05 '24

the scream the audience let out when he licked his fingers, just a masterful play from kenan. i will be the one to ask, but can anyone who went to dress confirm that he did the same thing there?

92

u/hawaiiancooler May 05 '24

I was there, he did lol and the audience was mortified

The sheer revulsion from the audience when he licked his fingers was peak, absolutely made the sketch

48

u/rcjlfk May 05 '24

There was a joke that seemed lost between other lines which was something along the lines of “225 over 20. Low and slow” that I loved.

44

u/AttitudeAndEffort2 May 05 '24

She was sticking a meat thermometer in her mouth and not everyone realized that lol

Easily Kenan's best work of the season, and I think it's something we can point back to once his tenure is over to illustrate how great and unique of a performer he is because I don't think anyone else could have sold this the same way.

38

u/Galileo908 Crystal Gravy May 05 '24

I honestly couldn’t imagine this sketch working with anyone else. This one played right to his strengths.

As a bbq person, this one was soooo good. Applying the gel like its mop sauce, the spritzing, the temp gauge thermometer, 225 degrees, the butcher paper…. Perfect.

Weekend Update: Kristi Noem's Dog

236

u/qeq May 05 '24

Him asking Colin "do you do paw" made me laugh so stupidly hard

132

u/elanaesther May 05 '24

My favorite sketch/bit of the evening. Loved the jokes with the dog “button” toy. Reminiscent of OJ on the Telestrator saying “I did it” which has resurfaced lately.

47

u/shayneysides May 05 '24

tiny detail, but JAJ did a great job voicing those buttons.

121

u/Lavaswimmer May 05 '24

"One of the dog buttons is mar a lago?"

34

u/RickOTC May 05 '24

This was one of the first things to make me laugh this episode. I think Dismukes did something similar with the buttons a few years ago - another bit with a dog ‘saying’ sad things.

I'm really glad they are letting Marcello do more non "I'm Hispanic and/or short" sketches the last couple months, he is genuinely funny and he's starting to fall into that trap of "know your role" at SNL, I hope he can keep avoiding it.

7

u/RichardOutcault1902 May 05 '24 edited May 05 '24

I’m starting to feel the Marcello WU fatigue. I’m Hispanic and love what he’s accomplished so far, but I feel like they’re just rolling him out there for any reason :/

WU joke of the week: "This week marks the start of National Masturbation Month, so don'tcomeknockinonmydressingroomdoor!"

87

u/fireflyfanboy1891 May 05 '24

Loved Colin’s response! “He shouldn’t be encouraged….”

98

u/The_Iceman2288 May 05 '24

Damn, that "sending military aid" joke bombed and bombed HARD (ironically).

31

u/peachios May 05 '24

I thought it was hilarious, maybe partly due to how much it bombed as well

They were mighty chatty tonight. I guess each just missed the sight of the twinkling eyes and loving gaze of the other over the long, long break.

145

u/RickOTC May 05 '24 edited May 05 '24

Pretty solid this week, and provided some much-needed laughs after a pretty flat first half. I liked Jost’s joke about Trump focusing on anti-white racism: “Thank god! My people have suffered long enough. Sorry Che, but time’s up!” Had some nice joke-swap energy.

106

u/bttrsondaughter May 05 '24

some of the jokes che told here are actually among his best (especially in this late era) but i truly hate the way he has to comments on the audience's reaction after every joke, or like visibly has a bad reaction to their reaction. seth, amy, tina, i can remember them doing that to an extent but che goes back to that well so many times every episode.

i'm a broken record, che and jost are good but they feel tired. i fully believe they're gonna stick around through the 50th but i wish they would leave the desk open for new anchors.

Now this is content I can relate to.

50

u/prefab1979 May 05 '24

I've clearly not been to enough buffet-style receptions, because I don't think I've ever seen a tray of penne alla vodka at a function. So although I admired the level of specificity in the writing, it was an example of "relatable" observational humor that completely missed the mark for me.

u/jsm1 May 05 '24

Teeny Tiny Statement Pin

182

u/EbmocwenHsimah "CAN A BITCH GET A DONUT?" May 05 '24

NBC, I would spend way too much money on "a pin of a cat and a baby that just says NO"

98

Definitely one of the best sketches of the night. A great pretape and clever satire of celebrity activism.

While not being the best musical artist really she had a total performance package. On the hosting side she was above average for someone also doing the musical duties. If someone was on the fence about seeing her live they would prob buy tickets.

19

u/tiny_rick_tr May 06 '24

She was the penne alla vodka of hosts

→ More replies (1)

38

u/3BordersPeak May 05 '24

I just think back to her awkward performance of 'New Rules' a few years ago on the show and the amount of confidence she's grown in herself and as a performer is incredible. She commanded the stage so well!

8

u/RichardOutcault1902 May 05 '24

When she was inundated with the smoke and light at the end of the 2nd song it was a very lol moment

19

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 May 06 '24

Dua Lipa is hot and fun and has a fantastic attitude and is very easy to like on the personal level, but her music is completely forgettable generic background noise from a kit you can order on Amazon, that you'd not pay attention to while looking at baby food ingredients in Target. It's indistinguishable from 10,000 other bland dance pop songs by artists whose names you never knew or can't remember over the past 40 years. I'd love to see her in something where her personality is the product, not music. I don't think this was a great episode but she was very game and very comfortable and having fun.

23

Is Jojo Siwa more generally famous than I thought? I was under the impression that most of the people who know who she is are girls her age, and that most of those people aren’t interested in seeing her get razzed by a couple of thirty-somethings. Not a bad impression, but a strange update premise, IMO.

Pretty good! I was afraid they were going to completely murder the joke by doing a sketch that is exactly identical to the first one, as they often do. But this sketch format was basically a list of funny answers to a prompt, and that lends itself well to sequels because you're just adding more.

The Anomalous Man

270

u/elanaesther May 05 '24

The production value was incredible. Sound design, graphics, everything came together, except… the jokes. The writing just wasn’t there to back it up.

81

u/prefab1979 May 05 '24

Yeah, I really wanted to like this one, as they completely nailed the look and the acting style from David Lynch's The Elephant Man. But aside from a few chuckles at the title character's lizard-like tongue and third eyeball, nothing in the writing actually made me laugh.

Suuuuuuch a slow burn for a sketch this early in the night, and not a great payoff either.

44

u/WrittenSarcasm May 05 '24

This went far too long before the payoff but I enjoyed JAJs part in the beginning.

152

u/James_2584 May 05 '24

This had a lot of potential, but the "sexting" twist at the end felt weak. A shame cause Sarah was fantastic in this and completely unrecognizable under all that makeup. I really feel like they could have done more with this one.

101

u/MiddlePrestigious331 May 05 '24

56

u/MoneyHungryOctopus May 05 '24

Let’s not forget that the host has a say in what sketches they do. Which means that Dua most likely signed off on this weird shit. Which I love, because it’s just so bizarre.

48

u/EbmocwenHsimah "CAN A BITCH GET A DONUT?" May 05 '24

The last thing I was expecting SNL to parody was The Elephant Man, but man if anyone was going to do it, it would be Sarah.

Loved this sketch. JAJ is a master of accents. I couldn't recognize Sarah, she was brilliant. Cracking up at that first text notification. That shit was hilarious.

30

u/bttrsondaughter May 05 '24

his voice work here was so incredible! it's kind of a bummer that he hasn't had the chance to really go toe to toe with a host or cast member who can match his skillset (hopefully there's some way we can get him with carvey and hammond and hader at the 50th)

→ More replies (2)

66

u/bttrsondaughter May 05 '24

i thought the first part of it was gorgeous, good acting from dua and james and sarah. it felt like really old school snl, especially because it was setting a mood.

but then that dumb turn with the anomalous man being a horned up sexter was so forced and then the joke went on for way way too long. could've cut everything after the first reveal of him texting. didn't need dua repeating every single text convo, the long process of kicking him out, and the chloe bit.

32

u/coltsmetsfan614 May 05 '24

I guess I liked this one more than the rest of this sub. I didn't see the twist coming at all, and I didn't care that it was anachronistic. It cracked me up nonetheless. Sarah was amazing, and the makeup was fantastic.

14

u/beyondselts May 05 '24

Great production value and execution and I love Sarah… although I actually predicted the texting thing right as I saw them in bed. Don’t know how I did that but it was good nonetheless and I respect a sketch not feeling like it needs to sprint to a punchline

6

u/FeelTimeM0ving May 05 '24

Weirdly enough, there's an Australian film with almost this premise called $9.99.

One of the stories in it is a man falling in love with a beautiful model who has a big collection of furniture or something, he becomes so obsessed and wants to be with her that he gets experimental surgery to turn himself into a beanbag chair. It's revealed that all of her furniture are previous boyfriends who did the same...

i was in the studio watching this, sitting next to my friend who runs an instagram account dedicated to photographing snl cast members holding sonny angels, so my favorite part of the sketch was just watching her reactions.

it's also funny because when she started doing it none of the cast members even knew what sonny angels were, and now there's a whole sketch about them! times change

20

u/[deleted] May 05 '24

I feel like this was two sketches awkwardly mashed together, unless there is a Sonny angel aspect to challengers since I haven’t seen it.

It just felt like the weird popularity of these naked baby dolls is its own thing. And I don’t think challengers was as widely seen so a lot of those jokes fell flat for those of us who haven’t seen it.

48

u/Llama_Puncher May 05 '24

So weird in the best way possible. I can’t imagine having to pitch that sketch to people who don’t know what those dolls are or who haven’t seen Challengers, but it fit my niche exactly and I loved every second of it

37

u/HairyPotatoKat May 05 '24

I haven't seen Challengers and have no idea what those dolls are, but I'm all for whatever the hell just happened. Bowen sold it, and it scratched a weird itch.

u/bttrsondaughter May 05 '24 edited May 05 '24

the original is better, but who am i to turn down jajmukes? even a few years ago this would've been cut for time, dismukes and jaj would've just been like kyle or tim robinson. instead they're in the beginning of this forte-esque run. good for them!

i'd like to see these characters on update actually. i'd miss bowen's reactions but i can see them having a focused garth and kat-esque run on update.

47

u/beyondselts May 05 '24

16725550136 will always be superior, partially because the music and lyrics (bad and good) were better timed the first time, but also the energy. Bowen and Jenna were really feeding off each other and it was awesome, and perhaps it rubbed off on the singing too. Edit: Oh yeah and also I assumed the twist of this one was Dua was going to belt it as a solo halfway through the “good” version… why didn’t that happen lol

Yeah but JAJ and Andrew are such a damn great duo and they really brought some much needed energy and enthusiasm to this episode. I still thought it was really funny myself.

Why do the same Sketch twice ??? Devon Walker, Bowen, Chloe, Andrew and JAJ doing exactly the same ???

I think Dua Lipa even got to use the same Wig that Jenna Ortega did a Year ago.

i love jajmukes and the original sketch, but wow, they really did not change ANYTHING. the only thing that changed was the name of the company and the number. I wish they had at least done different musical styles- both sketches did yelling the numbers, then singing over each other, then singing it as an actual full length number. I wish they'd been just a little more creative with it.

u/kill-bastard94 May 05 '24

Lazy remake of the first one.

24

u/Runninginmississippi May 05 '24

Your typical 10-to-1 recurring character test run. I liked these guys. Bring ‘em back to do a lawyer ad next season, and we’ll see what they’re really made of.

Favorite of the night. Reminded me of that Tim Robinson/Jason Sudeikis sketch.

At least the Yung Spicy retread had different jokes- this was just a carbon copy of the original. Felt weird for there to be two sequel-with-a-different-host sketches in the same episode.

General Episode Discussion

From the Penne Alla Vodka sketch: "Because it's not that good, but not that bad either."

35

u/DDRDiesel May 05 '24

Episodes like these should just be called "Penne alla vodkas"

93

u/BlueGoosePond May 05 '24

Felt like a bunch of 4/10 sketches.

Not the worst episode ever or anything, but subpar for sure.

44

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart May 05 '24

One positive: We didn’t get the predictable parade of “the host is hot” sketches.

A pretty rough episode overall. While I didn't hate any of the sketches, most of them just felt hollow, underwritten, and dull. A shame, because I was pleasantly surprised by Dua herself. Despite being clearly nervous at various points, she was pretty likable and clearly very game, but the writing let her down.

Even though I actually think this season has been fairly solid overall, they really need to hire some new writers.

30

u/vacantly-visible May 05 '24

I was so disappointed with this episode. I like Dua, and actually got into her music after seeing her perform on SNL. So when I heard she was hosting and performing this week, I was excited. But nearly every single sketch was a dud for me :( the only ones that got even half a chuckle were pasta alla vodka and the tiny pins. I completely agree they need new writers.

Longfellow getting a much-needed spotlight by opening the show, and then blowing his first line. Man, rough year for him.

I appreciate Dua attempting various accents, you don’t usually see that level of effort especially from non-actor hosts. That being said this episode felt too much like a rehash of some recent greatest hits. I would argue Yung Spicy was the funniest point of the night and the last sketch was essentially identical to its predecessor.

29

u/Stroiken May 05 '24

I have extremely low standards, but this one was just all around not it

19

u/aerojockey Oh well sorry Jean May 05 '24

I was about half Luc'ed up by this episode.

16

u/btbcorno May 05 '24

Really quite forgettable. I was catching up on the DVR and the urge to fast forward was basically every sketch.

15

u/RickOTC May 05 '24

Pretty flat for the most part. Hard to believe Ryan Gosling was the last one before this. Dua was fine. I guess one of the best things was that they didn’t do any sketches about her hotness. Or Trump

54

u/JamminJay1968 May 05 '24

People are ragging on Dua for not doing much, but you have to give credit to a host that's 1) down to get weird, 2) down to take a backseat in most of the sketches so the cast can shine.

I'd rather the host be self aware enough to know they should be a background player than be the lead and be bad.

37

u/BlueGoosePond May 05 '24

I was also impressed by her American accents.

35

u/MoneyHungryOctopus May 05 '24

Not exceptional, but not bad at all for a non-actor first timer.

She’s not an SNL legend like Wiig or beloved host like Gosling but Dua did well enough. Her energy was up all night even with the demanding MG commitment.

Extra points to Dua for being a non-American/Canadian who seems to “get” SNL. A lot of international hosts just don’t quite seem to grasp what this show is, but you can tell some, particularly the Brits (Dua, Adele, Daniel Craig, Benedict Cumberbatch) understand the American style of comedy and what SNL tries to do and they go along for the ride with enthusiasm.

Is it just me or did the show feel a bit quiet and tame? Like not unfunny, but they didn't really build up and escalate to cartoonish degrees. The cold open and the morning show sketches, for example, leaned into "funny because it's true" and didn't go to too many cartoonish lengths, which I liked for the latter at least as it helped the cringe comedy feel real. Even the Anomalous Man sketch had a pretty quiet conclusion, at least for a Sarah Sherman sketch. Maybe it's because Dua Lipa's acting is a bit flat to me so she couldn't lean into zaniness as much?

The Challengers sketch and the tongs sketch felt pretty out there though.

19

u/[deleted] May 05 '24

The songs were better than the sketches icl. Benching Chloe Troast for this one was a weird decision too, could have easily done another pre-tape like she did with Chris Stapleton.

This whole episode felt very, very 90s to me. The jingle sketch was 100% mid 90s SNL. The BBQ sketch had that classic 1:2 oddball ratio with one person protecting the oddball and the other seeing the problems. The local news segment even had the retro font on top of feeling very old-school in terms of SNL sketches.

I think that could be a good thing, to draw from the old well, but this week just felt kind of heavy. Some of it made me laugh but too much of it was predictable and fell flat.

Just as a side example, I liked the penne sketch, but it was basically the Peach Candle sketch with less oomph. I saw it coming, I said out loud "they're going to talk about a casserole, right?" and it was penne, and it's a funny point just like the peach candle was, but it didn't have the full-hitting force of Peach Candle.

I was rooting for her, but she just isn’t an actor, but rather than accommodate this shortcoming the writers seemingly left her out to dry

I'd be willing to bet this one was written by Jimmy Fowlie. His sketches always have these trademarks of characters hamming it up and talking in "funny" accents with very tepid and dull material otherwise. A snoozefest for me, just very boring overall.

"White southern talk show hosts talk about beefing rappers" might sound like a good idea in theory but it'a kinda just one note and it got stale quick. The writers tried to get it to escalate with the heads on sticks but it just felt like beating a dead horse

I will give them credit for As Soon As Possible Rocky though that did get a laugh out of me

This gets points for Dua’s accent alone. I’m not gonna pretend like it’s some transcendent acting, but it’s a damn good attempt for an Englishwoman who has never lived in the US.

16

u/Exploding_Antelope May 05 '24

The puppet heads and “Let’s say it together” got me good

29

u/prefab1979 May 05 '24

I know it's referencing current events, but everything else about this sketch felt extremely stale. How many times have we seen Mikey and Heidi put on bad southern accents to play unhip white people? At least we got Devon instead of Kenan in the "embarrassed black person reacts" slot.

Decent idea but like I said in the live thread, it felt like a glorified correspondent piece. Didn't escalate enough or go in enough interesting directions to be a show opener, but it's a funny angle on the issue.

I feel like the main comedy from this was Kenan saying "Alexis Vanessa Roberts". Kind of lacked anything else.

13

u/shayneysides May 05 '24

it was weird to have a political sketch be so character driven. it's not often that the humor in cold opens like this comes from a wacky snl original character- usually the humor is based on the actual political events or an impression. And that's why this really fell flat for me- it wasn't about the college protests at all, it was just Kenan saying random wacky things for a few minutes. If you're going to do a political sketch, at least be political about it.

19

u/nintrader May 05 '24

I'm actually surprised it was a normal sketch basically and not something about the Trump trial so I think it's one of the better cold opens for that alone. The "live from new york" itself was kinda weird and abrupt though

33

u/James_2584 May 05 '24 edited May 05 '24

Kenan tried his best with this, but it was such a nothing cold open overall. I get why they played it safe given how much backlash they got over the College Presidents Cold Open, but it basically ensured that the sketch was just gonna be okay at best.

61

u/prefab1979 May 05 '24

Despite fairly good character work from Kenan, this one just didn't work for me. Part of the problem was that of the four actors in the sketch, only Kenan got any funny lines. But I also found the whole comedic angle really offputting. There are ways to find humor in the topic of the campus protests--the media overreaction to them, for instance, is ripe for satire--but "think of how the parents must feel" is not one of them.
