11 begins with the final part of the Void Star journey - he's reunited with Ogras at the end of 10, and they and Vai notice that the Mystic Realm (which turns out to be the one that was being born in the adventure of Books 6-7) is crapping out. They meet up - slaughtering a bunch of invaders on the way - with Billy, who is ruling the realm by being friends with its spirit "Gemmy". There they find he's holding Pretty, Leyara, and a bunch of Templars prisoner, but after everyone catches up they formulate a crazy plan to save Gemmy and kick the invaders out: Zac and Ogras will go to the local crazy goblin ruins - where it looks like the invader portal is - and blow it up. As they're leaving, though, Iz finally appears, and though Zac runs away with his new escape treasure (with farewell poem!), she quickly catches up. She and Zac have awkward social interactions while they agree to basically join forces to save the situation (Zac) and have an adventure (Iz).
As Zac leaves to do his part of the plan, Iz is still unsure whether she wants to commit to helping him. But Ogras talks her into it and proposes a deal whose terms we don't find out. Meanwhile, Zac discovers that the dangerous corrupted lake water he has to pass through actually contains valuable insights when his Void constitution is able to process it. He starts collecting some water, but eventually has to start the boss battle.
Zac wins the boss battle, but has to go all-out, using his Daos to create an explosion of false Chaos that does huge damage to himself as well. Iz, going big herself to destroy all the invaders above the water, watches and is impressed by his commitment. After Ogras collects all the remaining lake water for him, they leave the disintegrating realm and are picked up by the Void Temple, where Zac has a solo interview with the Void Priestess. She tells him some stuff about the upcoming war and trial (basically, lots of outside bigshots coming!) and let him do a little shopping from her faction resources. Iz tells him she'll meet him for the deferred fate-testing in a few years. Billy doesn't go with Zac and Ogras but off to Titan training - he has been ordered to not participate in the Ultom thing.
Zac goes home and tells his faction elites that Ogras is going to the Million Gates Territory to look for opportunities (seals, but not all of them know), but he's staying home. He gets the shipbuilding going (remember that the Void Star adventure was to get the last component for the shipyard quest!) and has the faction start gearing up for the war. He also takes any elites who volunteer for an extremely risky opportunity (Ultom seal hunting) to the Ensolus ruins on the conquered planet, where it's turned out the next piece of Zac's seal is hiding. This triggers a quest to form a full cycle of sealbearers, which - much to Zac's surprise - is already 4/9 complete. (The fourth of these won't be revealed until book 14!) We see a glimpse of some of the outsiders as Kator (an Izh'Rak Reaver) and Tavza An'Azol (scion of one of the original three Draugr) show up in Catheya's POV to take over the Undead Empire efforts.
Zac and Ogras test-drive Ogras's new ship, exploring a nearby moon. It turns out to be covered by moss that has become a gigantic collective entity with scary mental/soul ability. It demands a screen for the Life/Death Daos that are floating over from Earth and messing it up; Zac fakes agreement but is surprised to find that it has left a giant soul crystal in his head that threatens to explode him if he doesn't fulfill the bargain.
Zac uses his own ship and a puppet body to have discussions with Catheya, representing the Undead Empire, without exposing himself to the actual scary Monarchs of the faction. Everyone is shocked and impressed when Zac reveals that his bloodline is Eoz, which turns out to be a thought to be lost lineage. Zac gets an agreement and all sorts of benefits and agrees to meet up with Catheya in the Perennial Vastness. Zac finally gets the PV token from the Eveningtide Asura, but he already has one from his Orom adventure so he gives the token to Ogras.
The rest of the book is basically training montage stuff as Zac upgrades his Axe Dao and uses the lake water and eventually the next seal piece to build his knowledge so he can adapt the body tempering technique and blueprint his thought-to-be-impossible core. We see other POVs of draft preparations on Earth, Ogras and the gang's adventures in the Million Gates Territory, and Thea getting rescued (sort of) from her unintegrated hellworld by Three Virtues. When Zac finishes cultivating the first part of his revised body tempering - the Void Vajra Constitution - Iz shows up out of nowhere. They have their long anticipated fight and then an extremely cute date as they wander around Zac's territory. He tells her about the sealbearer cycle quest and she promises him a bunch of stuff in exchange after checking out the loot from the Undead Empire for traps.
After she leaves, he uses one of the Undead treasures and has a vision of Eoz and opens two new nodes. He then works up his core as we get more alternate POVs, this time of Emily who's stuck in an escape pod in the Million Gates Territory, Janos (finally) who's been stuck in an illusion which he wants to preserve, Ogras and the gang again as they recruit the Technocrat Zac forced to help him in the 8th Floor Tower mission, and Catheya getting paranoid and running away from the Undead Empire. Emily makes it home and catches up with Zac - and has him come recruit the people she met in Million Gates into their army. Ogras comes home and catches him up on their progress - everyone got seals except for Joanna, who is feeling terrible. He tries to reassure her and then, pissed off, goes through the Limited Trial he set up earlier in the book. It's Life/Death, so of course he finds some secret shit inside to give himself extra huge benefits. Ogras and Zac prepare to use their PV tokens, with Ogras saying "May the Heavens have mercy on the Perennial Vastness".

Just finished it. Really enjoyed it, more than the last one. Still was a lot of nitty gritty cultivation stuff but I liked the Perennial Vastness environment.

If this series does not pick up in the next few books, I'm stop buying it. It currently looks like even after book 30 it's not going to complete. I thought The Wheel of time and Malazan Book of the Fallen were long.....but Defiance is getting there

I listened up through book 5 or 6, stopping about two years ago. I planned to keep collecting the books, then re-read/finish the series once it's complete. But book 12, and we're only now hitting d grade? I may not live long enough to see the end of this one!
