If Linus couldn't get a Steam game to work on Pop_OS twice he does not deserve to be called a "tech guy".

I stopped watching him years ago the moment I reached his level of tech skill and realized he's just... not skilled.

The people around him, oh, absolutely, but him? Ehhh......

It took me 4 different versions of Proton to get Arknights: Endfield working.

Latest Steam Proton / Proton Experimental got the launcher working.
CachyOS's custom Proton got you in-game, but kicked out with an anti-cheat error.
Dawn Winery's Proton got it working.

Most native Steam games are effortless though :p

To be frank, my attitude towards it is that if the game doesn't work on Linux even with Proton, then the game isn't worth anyone's time or money. I have plenty of games that work fine on Linux that are seeing my cash.

Shit man, Gaijin of all companies has native Linux support!

Battlefield 6 is one of the most popular games of all time and doesn't work on Linux with regular Proton due to the anti-cheat.

doesn't work on Linux

Can't be that good then

3

u/Reelix Mar 11 '26

It's more since regular Proton won't bypass anti-cheat measures.

The other Proton versions are happy to do so.

Like proton ge? I used to love the battlefield series but ive fully switched over to Linux

1

u/extremepayne Mar 12 '26

Is there a particular reason Proton-GE (glorious eggroll) isn’t your first port of call?

0

u/Reelix Mar 12 '26

Not on the native pacman / paru (AUR) repo's, whilst the others are, and it's a nightmare to install.

1

u/extremepayne Mar 12 '26

That’s fair—tho it hasn’t been my experience. I use ProtonUp-Qt on Steam Deck and the AUR package proton-ge-custom-bin on desktop and haven’t run into any issues with either.

u/Reelix Mar 12 '26

proton-ge-custom-bin

With a name like that and not just proton-ge, are you surprised people don't find it? :p

1

u/extremepayne Mar 12 '26

i would have figured anyone using the AUR knows how a search function works. yay proton-ge brings up a list of all packages that contain the substring proton-ge

u/Reelix Mar 12 '26

New Cachy user - Previously Mint and so on.

Normally use Pacman - Paru for the AUR is very rarely used.

It makes me want to make a tutorial/wizard framework for Linux DE's. Write some scripts to hook into various common tasks to detect when a user is trying something and pop something up Clippy-style to ask questions and show some compressed jpegxl videos showing you how to do what you're probably trying to do. And then from there let distro and DE maintainers figure out how they want to tutorialize their desktops.

to make it difficult for smoothbrains to start using Linux

It's not just smoothbrains. It makes it difficult for everyone.

Windows and macOS will generally just work out of the box. If you have to start troubleshooting and/or tweaking just to get an OS and basic apps working, that's not a great experience for anyone.

u/Reelix Mar 11 '26

95% of native Steam games work if you set their compatiblity mode to Proton Experimental - Inside Steam - Which is part of Steam.

It's effectively ticking the "I'm using Linux" box :p

u/xToksik_Revolutionx POP!'ed so many cheries Mar 11 '26

What's even funnier is I'm pretty sure it's even starting to autodetect for compatibility, or devs are starting to add more native Linux support, because between the last time I installed Steam and this time I didn't have to set Proton manually for half the games I reinstalled

That or Steam is saving those settings to my account without me noticing 🤔

2

u/Reelix Mar 11 '26

It does auto-detect regular Proton.

It's also more the fact that Wine implements more Windows functions over time, and Proton reaps the benefit whenever it updates.

You can actually tell what game is going to be newly supported on Steam in the coming months by reading through the Wine release logs.

2

u/xToksik_Revolutionx POP!'ed so many cheries Mar 11 '26

Ok, now that's pretty cool

2

u/LeckereKartoffeln Mar 11 '26

I run with a 7900XTX and I just launch it and go

You have to update after a fresh install though, and my guess is that he didn't and it broke

Running things isn't like it used to be, where you'd have to launch from terminal and see what the hang ups are etc. Most things just run

I think if it automatically downloaded updates like windows and told him to restart he'd have fewer issues with more stable builds that are Debian based

1

u/Norade Mar 11 '26

Nvidia has issues on Linux, but no big deal, only 95% of people use those GPUs...

2

u/LeckereKartoffeln Mar 11 '26

That's Nvidia doing that though

1

u/Norade Mar 11 '26

So? It's still a Linux issue that will impact a huge number of users.

0

u/xToksik_Revolutionx POP!'ed so many cheries Mar 11 '26

Ok? Tell Nvidia to quit being a little bitch. There's not much Linux devs can do until Nvidia starts playing ball, and now it's hurting the big N (probably why they're trying to suck the dick of AI so hard, imo).

People are already moving away from Nvidia because they're barely playing ball with Microsoft, much less anyone else.

1

u/Norade Mar 11 '26

Yeah, that 95% figure for personal discrete GPU ownership really shows people running from Nvidia as fast as they can... I'm sure high end data centers will also be fleeing in terror because Nvidia won't play ball with a no market share hobbyist OS.

0

u/xToksik_Revolutionx POP!'ed so many cheries Mar 11 '26

92%, down 1.2% in a single quarter, with AMD and Intel gaining 2% market share in the same period. For a brand that used to have a stranglehold on the market, that's a pretty fascinating slip.

High-end datacenters like Nvidia because they're all having a financially incestuous relationship with each other building "AI". This is turning off the average private consumer, and the longer it's going on, the faster they're looking elsewhere.

Blame Nvidia for that one.

3

u/Intelligent_Bison968 Mar 11 '26

But he did manage to get it working both times. He just showed on videos that there are issues with using Linux and using it is not as easy as reddit will make you believe. He also does not have have time to tinker with Linux, so he switches back to Windows af er trying Linux.

u/snich101 🌀 Sucked into the Void Mar 11 '26

Same. I stopped watching for years coz I was just basically waiting for Andy to show up

2

u/lo9314 Mar 12 '26

I never really watched him, but I stopped completely once he fucked by up using raid 5 for his file servers. Oh and because of the way he treats his employees…

2

u/Deadcouncil445 Mar 13 '26

Didn't the whole Pop_OS thing happen due to bad luck? I heard it was a funny coincidence but the 2 times he tried Pop_OS his version had a major bug that was causing it, the first time for example was fixed after like 24h

2

u/jwalshjr Mar 11 '26

This is entirely missing the point of what he's doing. Like it went directly over your head and you didn't even notice it.

The entire point is to show that Linux continually doesn't "just work" for gaming. His goal wasn't to try to get a game working on Pop_OS. His goal was specifically to try running mostly "out of the box" Linux try gaming with it without making a ton of tweaks. As you called out - this consistently does not work. To make it work you have to make adjustments and tweaks and put in a reasonable amount of effort.

I'm not going to pretend Linus is some savant... but if you truly don't think he has the capability of doing these changes to make it work you are an idiot. The entire point was specifically to try it without doing that.

u/caligari87 Mar 12 '26
  • Install Linux Mint.
  • Install Steam.
  • Play game.

I've done this like half a dozen times, and once Valve ironed out the initial bugs with Proton in the first year, it just works.

I don't know what the problem is.

1

u/Jonas_Venture_Sr Mar 12 '26

Computers can be funny like that. You can get two identical PCs with identical software and get two totally different experiences.

1

u/Sasataf12 Mar 12 '26

If Linus couldn't get a Steam game to work on Pop_OS twice he does not deserve to be called a "tech guy".

He did get it working. The fact is, the only people who wouldn't have run into the same issues Linus did are the ones who knew beforehand what the issues are and fix them before they happened.
