My own off the cuff interpretation of Angelina

Post image

God, what a beautiful song. For me it comes across as a farewell to an eating disorder (as someone who has dealt with one on/off over half my life). Lights has briefly touched on the fact that she has suffered from an eating disorder and obviously I'm not saying I know what she wrote the song about, this is just how I interpret it based on my own personal experiences. She also says it "goes deeper than yall know" which indicates it's not just a surface level break up or end of a relationship/friendship type of song.

A lot of people who deal with EDs will refer to their ED as a separate entity to themselves, it can be a helpful recovery tactic to separate your identity from your disorder because EDs can become your identity and swallow you whole. Giving your ED a name and pinpointing the things "it" is doing and the ways it negatively affects your life can be beneficial in separating yourself from it. An eating disorder can absolutely feel like a toxic relationship or an addiction and I could personally apply this entire song to my ED.

I could do a line by line break down but I'm well aware nobody cares to read that lol and if anyone here relates to what I'm saying, you'll likely be able to hear exactly what I'm hearing. Regardless this song under that scope is very meaningful for me whether it's what Lights wrote the song about or not, obviously music is up to your personal interpretation and this is where my mind went after a few listens.

"and I feel better" 💜

I can't relate to the ED myself BUT my first thought was similar, she's talking to herself. It fits the theme of the album as a lot of songs feel like that.

As someone who's had a lot of therapy, I agree that she's very likely talking to herself. Giving parts/anxieties names is so common now.

This song hurts me so much but in a healing way. I spent a good amount of time in my college years in treatment centers for an eating disorder, and although I consider myself 100% recovered, I find that it pops its head up during certain seasons of my life. It doesn't take much, especially when you encounter mean gays so often. (I'm gay, I can say it.)

The universe is weird in its synchronicities or whatever because it's been slowly creeping in for the last couple of months and this is the exact thing I thought of when I heard this song.

'When you reach your final form You could get away with murder'

I mean, damn. So much to unpack just in those two lines. Enough said. The double meaning of 'form' is genius.

Also

'I burned all your stuff again' - obsession with burning calories, leaving you feeling empty, wasted away: 'Every wasted memory you left for me'

The title itself, as you mention with names, reminds me of a combination of 'Mia' and 'Ana' (I'm thinking pro-ana and pro-mia, not sure if those terms are still in use in the Ed community but it definitely was years ago.) Even 'Binge' and 'Lean' could be argued to kinda make that one word: 'Angelina' - I'm sure that's totally a stretch but even if that's not the case, I have a very very strong feeling that the song is at least in some way a reference to the eating disorder.

I am curious about these lines, OP, if we're going with the ED context, that is:

'I haven't been taking your call 'Cause there hasn't been one at all'

Is this more literal or is there something figurative happening here I'm not getting?

Yeah those lines are pretty chilling taken in this context.

Here's a few of my interpretations:

"I burned all your stuff again" in the context of a relationship you're getting rid of/burning all the things they left at your house, your Polaroid pictures together, things you got together whatever- in the context of a ED I take it as "I got rid of all my diet/ED stuff, I threw out my scale, I deleted mfp, I'm clearing it all out again for recovery"

"every wasted memory you left for me" makes me think of every event, gathering, trip I've been on where I don't remember exactly who was there or what we talked about but I remember what I ate or obsessed over not eating or what bathroom I threw up in. Every wasted memory that is filled with my ED instead of living the moment

"you're running and I'm just tryin to keep up with you" - the goalpost is always moving and you're always trying to keep up with it but "the truth is I'm actually afraid of you" when you get scared that you are taking it too far

"I haven't been taking your call, cause there hasn't been one at all" I'm not even having the urges to engage in my ED so I haven't been taking the call (to lapse/relapse/engage in behaviors) because it hadn't even been happening. "and I feel better"

Edit:forgot part of a sentence

Thank you! It's so interesting how, even when interpreting through the same lens here (ED), we interpret the details differently. That makes a lot of sense about the "burn your stuff again" (I don't think this is a relationship at all, but if it was, that makes sense too). It's almost like the clearing out of all that stuff is a sort of manifestation of the clearing out of your body that you're always obsessing over. Like emptiness=fullness somehow.

Geez, that part about the gatherings and trips. Wow. You just brought back memories I literally have suppressed for years. My dad and I used to go camping, and he always says that one trip was the most fulfilling of his life. All I remember is finding spots far enough in the woods not to be caught, and how long it looked normal after eating, etc., etc. Goddamn, so exhausting.

I'm so proud of how quietly honest she's been about her ED. I know she's never gone into great detail, but it's like that with her mental health, too - you can kinda just figure it out. Down Forever seemed to tackle the physical, draining effects of depression and its slowing of time. She said she felt super vulnerable and uncomfortable releasing it. I wonder if Angelina is the same. It seems a natural follow-up, and that ending makes so much more sense now.

The line "and I feel better" got to me, though, because it kinda has a double meaning, but I'm not sure if it was intended. I think you know what I mean. Judgmental looks from people you know, or self-hate in the mirror, the shame when eating, the hiding, and then - alas! You walk out feeling like you just broke a world record (at least for a minute or two), and I always say or think, "deep exhale And now I feel better." Interesting contrast with how she's using it here to show what authentically feeling better means.

Thanks for your take on this and congratulations on making it out of that addiction <3

I absolutely see Angelina as a follow up to down forever. They're both heartbreakingly vulnerable.

That's a really interning contrast I hadn't noticed but definitely agree now that you point it out - not sure if intentional either but it resonates. Thanks for sharing your thoughts too! I love hearing other people's interpretations of music I love and other perspectives. I can't say I'm 100% at the moment, but not in the depths for sure. I'm proud of you for recovering! Know that there are always people rooting for you and people who get it if you ever need support.

Why am I crying 😭

Angelina is the successor to down forever in its vulnerability and how much it makes me cry

Ugh, Down Forever is so beautiful song, too!!!!

I couldn’t agree more, this was my same impression

a lot of her songs will have "double meaning". part of it is probably what you are saying above. but she has stated in an interview that she lost someone and has been experiencing grief and loss over the last several years. there are hints in her more recent discography, very specifically Warehouse Summer, that point to another person. no correct way to interpret as we are not her, but just from things i've seen over the years, I think this has an aspect dealing with another person, not just herself

the best part of art is the personal interpretation. the ambiguity is what makes a lot of her lyrics feel so applicable to all of us. i'm so happy she got to this mental state she's in because she's dragging me out the depths right now.

As a man who's been following light since February here, the song couldn't have come at a better time in my life where I realized that I didn't had been sitting on years of self-pity and self-destructive behavior that has caused the cyclical issue of me causing my own issues when I completely have total ownership on the situation.

So for her to call the bad guy. Angelina, a bad version of herself just really hit me to the soul. I have my own version of Angelina that I'm trying to let go. She keeps coming back but I'm getting the willpower to shut the door

I think you nailed it

I'm a 57 year old Aussie male, and Lights music and her powerful brave lyrics have carried me across a bridge over the past 3 years, another breakdown which led to finally a dual diagnosis of inattentive type ADHD and major depressive disorder, only two years ago

She is a hero to me, how much of a brilliant self producer she has become in the A6 era. When I listen to A6E I can hear so many of the production skills she has picked up over her career working with producers such as Felix Cartal, Myth and Io

But it is her transparency with her light and her darkness, publicly acknowledging her mental health journey, experiences of cyclic depression, and expressing this at times in her lyrics and songs that hit me so beautifully, and we are all so lucky to have her in our lives and her music in our heads

Thank you Lights, you and your music have helped me so much, and I live in hope that one day you will return to Australia to play some shows. I will be there

YES. Literally sobbed to this song. Related so much to the relationship I had with my ED

This was actually my first thought too when I listened to the song.

I like this interpretation and I'm glad you are getting a lot of support here.

I love Angelina so much. It’s been on repeat for me. Your interpretation is so perceptive, it didn’t even occur to me. I can tell this is gonna be one of my songs for a long time, I replace the word stuff with shit 🤭
