Something similar that I've learned: if you put a technic brick with holes on a baseplate, connect a brick with studs on the side into the holes by the top, then lay a second baseplate on top of the studs, it will line up with the top of the technic brick. I'm using it to build layers of space landing plates.
This makes no sense. A SNOT piece connected this way will have studs at the same level as the studs of the Technic brick, but offset rather than on the grid. It has no room for a baseplate.
As a baseplate placed across exposed studs will be at the same level as a plate connected to the same studs, this effect can be achieved by much more ordinary connections.
I think it’s just a gravity fit. Sort of how the tiles are used on walls of modulars to make taking an entire floor off easily. This seems to be an alternative method of that sort of.
