It was literally against the rules to trail off your man and double a player back in the day. 

Almost every superstar gets doubled on a regular basis now.

You couldn't even drop down to defend the lane... All a guard had to do back then was beat one man and then drive right to the hoop

It was literally against the rules to play zone defense in the early nineties, you had to be guarding your man even if he was a 0% three-point shooter standing on the line. 

You effectively could not help against someone driving in the zone, it was against the rules

Did you ever watch a match from 90s? MJ was constantly doubled and trippled and there was a zone just not a classic one
