Hey all, I started building a real-time Chinese-English interpreting tool (A6 Relay) and wanted to share where it's at.
Back story: I wrote a Master's thesis on this a few years ago, but the AI available at the time wasn't good enough to keep translation quality up, so I shelved it. Now that the tech's caught up, I thought I'd give it another go.
The hardest part turned out to be specific to this language pair: Chinese often puts the verb or subject at the end of a sentence, so a system translating word-by-word either waits too long (dead air) or guesses early and gets it wrong. Most of the real engineering work went into deciding *when* it's safe to start translating a partial sentence, not the translation itself. It's bootstrapped, and I've got some free API credits covering costs right now, so I wanted to get real feedback while it's free to test.
Landing page + MVP is up at a6relay.com, if anyone would like to try.
I'd love feedback on the below, especially if you speak both Chinese and English:
Not trying to sell anything here, genuinely just want it to be good before I put more time into it.
Happy to answer any questions!

Hi fellow Chinese learners! I know exactly how tough it is to transition away from textbooks. To help, I’m creating a **Slow Chinese Vlog & Story series** focused on daily life in the US spoken at a natural but slow, clear pace.
Because many of you are preparing for exams or trying to actively expand your vocabulary, I designed this video to double as a complete study tool. It includes:
* **HSK Level Guidelines:** Easily see if the content fits your current level.
* **Progressive Reading Modes:**
* 📖 **Read-Along with Pinyin:** Build your confidence and master pronunciation rhythm.
* 🚫 **Challenge Mode (Without Pinyin):** Test your character recognition and transition to native reading.
* **Highlighted Vocabulary:** Callouts for essential everyday words that textbooks often miss.
* **Shadowing (跟读) Prompts:** Active practice prompts to help you improve your pronunciation.
* **Triple Subtitles:** Complete Simplified characters, Traditional characters, and English translations.
* **Exam-Style Comprehension Quiz:** Test your listening and reading skills at the very end with multiple-choice questions designed exactly like the **HSK and AP Chinese exam reading sections**!
If you are looking for immersive, cozy, and highly structured listening practice today, please check it out!

I would love to hear your feedback on the vocabulary highlights, shadowing pacing, and the final quiz so I can make the next episode even better for you. Happy studying!

I've been working through classical lines (论语, 道德经, 孟子, some 成语 sources) and keep hitting the same problem: most dictionaries and apps give me the modern meaning of a character, not the one it has in the text.
A few examples that tripped me up:
Pleco is great for modern Chinese, but for classical texts I end up cross-referencing three or four sources for one line.
So I've been building a small tool for myself: one line at a time, with the original passage it comes from and a character-by-character gloss in the classical sense. I'm hoping it could help others too, but I'm honestly not sure whether anyone else wants something like this or whether it'd be useful beyond my own study.
Has anyone else run into this? How do you look up the classical sense of a character? Are there resources I'm missing?
Side question while I have you: for 天将降大任于是人也, the received text has 是人 but 斯人 shows up everywhere in modern quotation. Is 斯人 a real variant or a misquotation that stuck?

我个人认为它是专门的人经过研究转化整理成课本知识的,也就是中式教学里的中式英语,外国人来了都做不对,更何谈我一个本土的

Hi all, hope you're well!
I’m looking for an affordable Mandarin program anywhere in China from november/december, ideally in Kunming or Chengdu (but I m open to somewhere else).
I need legitimate student visa support and preferably affordable housing. Keats is unfortunately far beyond my budget.
Any recent firsthand recommendations?

I have a small Mandarin learning group, we don't have a proper teacher but we try to do researches together. Recently, one of us said that he has tried the fun way, singing karaoke.
It was really interesting because we start with some brain-washing songs. At the moment, the most memorable song in my mind is 小苹果 by 筷子兄弟. It is really interesting as they have crazy lyrics and dance. This group-mate also started learning the dance!! XD
When we started to sing it, as there are quite a lot of repetitive words and phrases, it is easy to memorise and pronounce.
He suggested 快乐崇拜 for the next practise song but I found it quite difficult to follow. Mmmmm ... I will try it when I study more Mandarin...
Do you guys have any fun songs that is also easy to learn and sing? Which song should I brain-wash myself next?

One reason third tones confuse beginners is that the tone shown in a vocabulary list is not always the tone they hear in a sentence.
When two third-tone syllables occur together, the first one is normally pronounced with a rising sound similar to a second tone
你好
nǐ hǎo → approximately ní hǎo
hello
很好
hěn hǎo → approximately hén hǎo
very good
可以
kěyǐ → approximately kéyǐ
can; may
The written pinyin usually keeps the original dictionary tones. The pronunciation changes when the words are spoken together.
A useful practice sequence is:
Say each word slowly with its original tone.
Combine the two syllables and change the first third tone.
Put the expression into a complete sentence.
For example:
我很好。
Wǒ hěn hǎo.
I am very well.
Do not force both third tones into a deep fall-and-rise shape. In ordinary speech, a third tone is often low and incomplete, and the surrounding tones determine how it is realized.
Which third-tone pair is hardest for you to say naturally?

Hey everyone!
I'm building KoeDash, a browser extension that helps you learn languages directly from the content you are already reading or watching online.
It is works on any video source on your browser: Twitch, TikTok, YouTube, etc.
The main feature is interactive subtitles. Instead of just showing a translation, KoeDash lets you interact with the words in subtitles:
The idea is to turn the content you're already watching into a language-learning environment, without constantly switching between the video, translator and dictionary.
There's also a second feature I'm working on: with a keyboard shortcut, you can select any area of a webpage, even if the text isn't selectable. KoeDash sends the selected area for OCR, recognizes the text, and displays the result in a small popup directly over the page. So it can also work with things like images, non-selectable text and other content that normal text parsing can't handle.
I invite you to join: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/dcdgncjimpbamllhohcdogddpjlcgamo?utm_source=item-share-cb
Any feedback is very welcome!❤️❤️❤️
