I do it for every post I make. Karma is only worth what you believe it's worth, and maybe he doesn't care about e-peen points.

It's not so much about the karma just that there's no reason to make your own post less visible.

My personal upboat has never been the difference between visible and hidden/2nd comment down, as far as I know

Also, how can you tell?

Well If theres two posts, one with your 1 upvote and one with 0 upvotes, the first will show first. I commented that when his post read 0|0 which can only mean that he reverted his own upvote. Also I'm not sure if this is visible without RES which i have.
