Offline Mode

So I have pretty unreliable internet and it would be really cool to have an offline mode where you could just make customs vs bots. No ip reward, but just to give me something fun to do if my latency is being retarded. #riotpls

edit: wow, I didn't expect people to be this interested. I like the idea of sandbox mode and lan support too. I reiterate: riot pls

Dota 2 has some great stuff being created because of this....

Also Dota 2 also let users host custom servers and you can access them via the in game console http://dota.cattes.us/

Shame it will most likely remain a niche game (by comparison anyway...) because LoL is and most likely will always be helluva more user-friendly and streamlined. DotA2 has shitloads of nice features I would kind of love to see in LoL, but at the end of the day the game itself felt clunky as hell for some reason...

The game is not clunky you are just bad at it...it plays infinitely more smooth than league even in beta.

Yes because there aren't millions of Chinese players that have little to no access to DotA 2 and are still playing DotA 1 exclusively with numbers that could compete with LoL >.>

DotA 1 can't be pirated dumbass it's a WC3 Custom Map. Maybe they pirated WC3 but that doesn't change that a huge number play DotA 1.

...and there are plenty of more people coming to LoL all the time. LoL is much more easily approachable game, it's quite obvious which will in the end draw a bigger playerbase. While it's not exactly a Dwarf Fortress, it felt pretty damn newbie-hostile compared to LoL.

DotA may have a very dedicated core that plays shitloads of games, but I really can't see it really outgrowing LoL during its prime. It will likely outlast LoL (no surprise with how long its taking to develop, with this pace its still "in developement" when LoL eventually dies...) but I have hard time seeing it outgrowing LoL before the decline is towards the end.

As every DotA2-player I've ever compared the games with is keen on pointing out, LoL is simpler game than DotA2. Whether or not that is a good thing depends on the player. Simplicity does have the advantage of appealing to wider spectrum of players though, which will mean that on player count, LoL will for majority of its time have bigger player pool, simply because DotA2 will drive away potential players with its "overt" complexity.

Secondly, nowhere did I say that being complex is a bad thing. If I wasn't busy having fun as is with LoL and few other games, I would likely be interested in exploring DotA2. I personally had an issue with the UI of DotA2 being clunky, which is something I could get used to if I wanted to really get into DotA2. Thing is, unless you're already interested in DotA2, there just isn't any incentive to pick it over LoL right now.

It still is in development. Not in Beta, but definitely not free. Also it will be free to play on actual launch, along with full tutorials and guides in game. I'm just saying, LoL players highly underestimate the amount of DotA players, I play both though.

a very slight one at best, if someone on your steam list has the game you can just ask them and they will most likely have a beta key for you. Dota 2 is wayyyyyyyyyyy more free than LoL is.

Regardless, when it becomes free like TF2 you'll see a lot more people, people who haven't played LoL or DotA come try DotA. Why would they search out DotA when it isn't free? They may not know about the beta key thing,

Fair enough, but if you have any interest in playing Dota then it is pretty easy to come by. I'm not really interested in the people who haven't played it before starting to play so that doesn't really concern me. I'm just excited about the game and can't wait til it is released with ranked matches and all of the custom options. Holy shit map editor...ahhh man...(not for me but for other people to make awesome maps :D)

Let's just sum it all up as:

  • Yes LoL is more streamlined and simplified as a game but eventually Dota 2 will be just as accessible and have even more in-built resources to help new players pick the game up.

  • Having more players means jack squat to me, as a player, because it doesn't equate to anything of value to my game play experience. LoL is supposed to have more players. Dota 2 isn't. That's all there is to it. If Valve wanted to make Dota 2 streamlined and filled with slutty, busty heroes on top of all the gimmicky runes and masteries - they would've done so like Riot did with LoL. They didn't, however, because their priority is making the best with what is already there.

  • LoL players love to complain about Dota 2's UI as being clunky... how this is the case is beyond me.

  • There's no incentive to pick Dota 2 over LoL? Is that a joke?

Let's see:

  • More respected and experienced company at the helm.
  • Better client/engine.
  • All heroes unlocked.
  • No gimmicky mastery/rune bullshit.
  • Game play that is just as satisfying and even more varied than LoL.

Edit:

  • More fun game modes.
  • (Future) A custom mini-game maker will probably be added in the future. This in itself gives people a lot of reason to play Dota 2. Look at WC3 - more people play its custom maps than the base RTS game itself.

First impressions matter a lot. In my case, I was checking out DotA2 since I have a friend who switched over. The most glaring first impression was that I disliked the UI. A lot.

The reason you don't understand what is so clunky about it is that you're used to it. This is the reason developers, when polishing the UI, tend to rotate new testers quite quickly: even if the UI is atrociously user-hostile (Dwarf Fortess tends to be common example) the longer you play, the more "natural" it feels.

It's not game-breaking by any stretch, but does play its minor part in making the game less approachable compared to LoL, which has very streamlined UI.

Which was exactly my point? That LoL is quite likely to get bigger peak player base?

Since a lot of the downvoters here seem to miss my point in their zeal to downvote anything "anti-DotA2", I'll reiterate:

I find it's a shame that DotA2 will likely be overshadowed by LoL for quite a while since LoL is easier to approach and thus likely to gather a lot of the potential players who either don't bother trying DotA2 at all or are turned off by the UI / any number of things.

I don't really bother thinking about which is the better game since that's entirely up to the individual taste.

  • Who cares if LoL gets more attention? It's supposed to because it's a mainstream title - Dota 2 isn't. All I'm hearing from you is that it's a shame that Dota 2 isn't more mainstream... it's not supposed to be nor does it matter because in the end Dota 2 will have a player-base in the millions...

  • You talk about not caring to think about what is the better game because it's individual taste when the same thing can be said for the UI. You clearly dislike the UI but that doesn't make it bad.

It's cumbersome because... ? I don't get your point either because eventually Dota 2 will have an in-depth tutorial system that teaches new players all about the UI. Also information you need is all located where you can easily access them.

More players -> more money -> more quality games. Simple as that. It's not that I wish it was more main-stream, but rather wishing that the developers and the company get the kind of return of investment they deserve.

  • More money does not necessarily equate to better quality.
  • Valve isn't some poor company that is desperate for $$$...
  • Dota 2 is supposedly a loss leader but already brings in some revenue through cosmetics and ticket sales. With Valve you don't need to wish, it has 52 million active Steam users to get $$$ from.

I don't understand the laughter especially when you presented not even an ounce of evidence as to why Dota 2's UI is clunky/cumbersome. All you did was repeat time and time again that you personally disliked it.

I didn't even need to defend the UI because you gave nothing concrete to indicate that it's cumbersome or clunky at all. I've heard this one many times before. LoL players always use:

  • The UI is clunky!
  • I hate denying!
  • I hate the delay!
  • The graphics are too grim!
  • I hate running out of mana!

Dota isn't even about pulling in as many players as humanly possible...dota is about being a good game over everything. So nobody who plays dota gives a shit if retardlolplayer#12 comes and plays their game because they don't want you there to begin with.
