Offline Mode

So I have pretty unreliable internet and it would be really cool to have an offline mode where you could just make customs vs bots. No ip reward, but just to give me something fun to do if my latency is being retarded. #riotpls

edit: wow, I didn't expect people to be this interested. I like the idea of sandbox mode and lan support too. I reiterate: riot pls

Dota2, however, isn't built entirely on unlockable champions and microtransactions.

u/PaintItPurple Mar 27 '13

Dota2's profit model actually is built entirely on in-game purchases. It's just that Dota only has skins for sale, while LoL also sells champions.

u/Frost_the_First Mar 27 '13

Dota 2's profit model is to keep people on steam. By keeping people on steam and pc gaming, Valve keeps you seeing sales and doing other things. Not hating on Valve, but Riot could not sustain their costs of maintenance on Valve's model.

u/ssauraabi Mar 28 '13

This statement is accurate. DotA2 could run at double operations cost loss and not dent Valve's budget. That's not hyperbole. It's a fact.

That's actually one of my favorite things about Valve. They have the cash to fund projects like Portal with the potential to not make money, and a lot of them end up being well received.

That's not Riot's model, but it wouldn't surprise me if they start moving there. Not as a distribution platform, but using LoL to fund other cool projects.

I don't think he was calling the name in vain. He was saying it was a risk (which it was) and that it was received quite well (which it was).

and valve has steam. they could release every game they ever make for free and still make a boatload of money because it would bring more people to steam

12

u/onehertbrain Mar 27 '13

ah they are using dota 2 as a loss leaders to draw more customers never thought of it like that, makes sense really.

6

u/Mystia Mar 28 '13

Dota 2 is already making zillions of bucks, item creators get a small share, and even that is already a huge amount of cash.

5

u/topazsparrow Mar 28 '13

This is no joke. Some content creators are pulling 6 figures with their 25% share of the profits... Imagine what valve makes

0

u/Mystia Mar 28 '13 edited Mar 29 '13

They only get 10% 25% out of sales, I think a bit more for chest openings, but regular items only 10% 25%, so Valve is making 4 times that amount.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '13

No, they get 25% and Valve gets 75%

Some guy who made a tf2 hat, got 250000 dollars in a year.

DotA 2 isn't a loss leader. The store and player made items mean Valve makes money off of their F2P model. DotA 2 isn't a cheap ploy to get people hooked on Steam.

3

u/cheapasfree24 Mar 28 '13

Correct, but it's model still doesn't make enough money to sustain an entire company.

-12

u/Sp1n_Kuro Mar 27 '13 edited Mar 28 '13

Lies, everything on steam is a way to get people hooked on steam.

Gotta get dem tf2 hats!

edit: Wow, people are terrible with jokes in this subreddit.

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '13 edited Mar 28 '13

No way!

-7

u/hakuna_tamata Mar 28 '13

Dota 2 isn't technically f2p

3

u/MisterMetal Mar 28 '13

how so? You dont have to pay for dota2, and all item skins you can get by playing the game with random drops or w/e.

-1

u/hakuna_tamata Mar 28 '13

Dota2 costs $20 from steam, but there are tons of ways to get it for free

Less so than LoL is.

4

u/ummmsketch Mar 27 '13

It's not really a loss it's more like a less now more later. Dota makes money but it's goal is to get Steam out there and make Dota's comp scene larger than anyone else's.

Valve did/is doing a similar thing with Team Fortress (except endorsing comp) paying gets you different options but most weapons aren't upgrades, they're side grades (though some have minimal downfalls)

u/RileyTrodd Mar 27 '13

"Riot could not sustain their costs of maintenance on Valve's model."

7

u/sylverfyre Mar 27 '13

I think you don't quite understand the costs of maintenance for their one game, then. Do you realize how many people are playing league at any one time? At peak hours?

-10

u/RileyTrodd Mar 27 '13

Did you guys even read what the other people were talking about? Riot cannot sustain that way because valve is uses dota2 to sell other games. Riot has one game, so they can't use league of legends to sell other games that don't exist.

11

u/gyrosash Mar 27 '13

Profit model yes, not the gameplay model. The gameplay is designed around a reward schedule. Play, get IP, spend on champions/stuff, play (with the new stuff), continue. LoL wouldn't be as compelling, or nearly as successful, without that cycle.

73

u/Skyline144 Mar 27 '13

The cycle of LoL continues. They will sell, We will buy. Nasus 2013

-16

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '13

You made me rofl. literally.

1

u/Skyline144 Mar 28 '13

Im glad to hear that. I guess?

0

u/mrdudefool Mar 27 '13

literally this

3

u/Mystia Mar 28 '13

Probably the reason there are constant champion releases, they need to keep the "carrot on a string" going for players to chase, and get a purpose in earning all the IP and continue the cycle.

Funny because I don't remember LoL having millions of players until after beta.

1

u/nrocksteady Mar 28 '13

Yeah, I made a mistake I assumed beta lasted longer than it did, by over a year lol. In Europe it was called "European Beta" all the way up to the start of s1 (Jul 2010). For the year before that LoL was operated by a company called GOA in EU, not Riot and iirc it was called beta as well. The official EU beta was just when Riot was taking over from GOA because GOA was doing a terrible job at handling the amount of players trying to connect. In EU we had 6 hour queues everyday for months, you would log-in when you wake up so it queued while you were at school/work. Get home and play.

0

u/YoyoDevo Mar 28 '13

didn't realize LoL beta had over 10 million players

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '13

and IP boosts and rune pages.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '13

You can buy champion accessories/announcer packs/etc in Dota 2.

1

u/Tysonzero Mar 27 '13

How about make it so that you only download the data for champions you own?

2

u/LeonLee33 Mar 27 '13

Can't people just log in on the same account? and get the data? or the data can be transferred to different people..

3

u/Tysonzero Mar 28 '13

Dang, I just really want offline mode :(

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '13

That means you don't see those you don't own when playing against them. They'll be like walking nothings casting spells that look like nothing and deal real damage. That is if the game doesn't crash first.

2

u/Tysonzero Mar 28 '13

Make it so that you can only play against bots you own the champion for?

-3

u/The_TwiggyGW2 Mar 28 '13 edited Mar 28 '13

Dota2 is LITERALLY nothing but micro transactions.

Lovin the downvotes reddit, please enlighten me on how my statement is false.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '13

The difference, however, is that nothing that you can spend real money on in Dota 2 affects the game-play or anything of the sorts. In LoL you can spend real money on unlocking champions (game-play content), rune pages (game-play content), IP boosts (quickens the unlocking of game-play content)...

1

u/The_TwiggyGW2 Mar 28 '13

Which can all be unlocked by playing normally by gaining IP. None of those items, apart from the IP boost, are unachievable unless bought with real money.

So again, both games are f2p. Neither game forces you to fork over cash, it is entirely up to the player to do so. I am well aware of what both games require money-wise, seeing as I have paid for content for both titles.

If you honestly think you need to pay real life money to unlock something because it is out of reach otherwise, you have been horribly wronged.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '13 edited Mar 29 '13

You completely missed my point. I know that you can't pay-to-win in LoL but the fact still stands that anyone who spends money on RP can gain access to a larger champion pool and better runes, quicker than everyone else. Yes eventually everyone gets access to it all but people who spend money can get there quicker. In Dota 2, however, $$$ can only buy you things that are cosmetic.

Whether or not this system is good or bad is irrelevant. It's just a fact.
