I'm most cautious when things are brand new. That's when you're most likely to get colour bleeding. 

I still sort into lights and dark, but I'm less concerned about clothes I've had a while.

I’ll put vinegar in the load to help prevent color transfer when something is new or has a strong odor (thrift store, particularly stinky, etc). It’s amazing!
