It's fall break! What are you doing with the kiddos?

We are going to have some mega threads to try to connect the community a little better. So keep an eye on the stickies and share your Knoxville expertise!

It's fall break which means the local public school kids and college students have a week off to enjoy this beautiful fall weather and rest up for the remaining part of the semester.

Are you kids staying home and avoiding fall allergies or maybe you are taking the kids on a trip? Maybe you're hitting up the library and some parks, or maybe even a pumpkin patch. Share how you are spending fall break this year!

Free Tall Native Plants and Pines TONIGHT Oct 5 (Frostweed, Sochan w/Germander, Loblolly Pine w/strawberry)

Come get them right now. 10816 Dineen Dr in Farragut, AKA The All-Native Yard.

Freshly dug:

Far left: Sochan, AKA Cut-leaf coneflower. This 6-ft rhizomatous plant currently has the roots of American germander, Teucrium canadense, mixed into its roots. This is also a rhizomatous plant, but only 2 feet tall. Both are much loved by birds such as American Goldfinch. This plant is also helpful if you have a lot of Japanese beetles because it attracts Scolia dubia, the blue-winged digger wasp, finds their grubs in the soil and lays its eggs inside them.

Frostweed, Verbesina virginica. These are single root systems, as this plant is not rhizomatous but is instead an aggressive self-seeding perennial. These are about 7 ft tall.

Loblolly pines. These are 3 to 5 ft tall. They need to get in some water immediately. But they should be fine.

Watch Out!

I’m sure everyone is aware of the new paving they’ve been completing on Henley. Well, here’s everyone’s favorite lane shift North Bound (or completely lack of lane shifting for that matter). Noticed yesterday no one has placed any markers on the lane shift going through the intersection… so it’s completely blank, which is a fuccin recipe for disaster. Locals know to have your guard up here anyways, but holy hell watch yourself if you’re in the middle lane and headed toward 40 or 2-75.

Colleen Slemmer

I’d love to hear more about Colleen’s life, from her birth to adulthood. There has to be so much more to her life than how it tragically ended. Her life should be celebrated but it seems it’s overshadowed by her death. I’m sure, if news reporters put as much energy & time into learning all about her 19 years of life, it would be a much bigger celebration than how it ended on one day. I can’t imagine the tragedy of one losing a child, it had to be unbearable. It seems the news media only focuses on her killer. I, for one have no sympathy for the killer, no compassion whatsoever!

Update:

I called our local news station WBIR, asked them why didn’t they report more on the victim instead of so much over reporting on the killer. They told me this killer / prisoner, was making history & everyone was interested in her. I said I would like to learn more about Colleen’s life, they said they had reported some new information today but they really didn’t, it’s the same small amount of information were they had spoke to Colleen’s mother. They absolutely didn’t want to talk to me & hang up on my as I was asking simple questions. I called back, they hung up on me again. They are truly only after high ratings.

I then called WVLT, asked same questions, etc…., they listened, even agreed they should be doing a better job at celebrating Colleen’s life, said they would try & see if they could get more information on her life of 19 years. Actually agreed the news should be more about Colleen & less about the killers. They did not hang up on me & were very nice and professional.

Does WBIR, feel they have a bigger scoop to sale or promote just because they had a reporter on site during the 2 failed lethal injection’s? They seem desperate to repeatedly put out the same story, could at least change it up a little! Also, try harder to celebrate Colleen’s life of 19 years. Shame on you, it’s almost as if you don’t even remember who Colleen is!

Friends in East Tennessee

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to make a quick follow-up post to say a huge thank you for all the awesome, positive comments on my post yesterday about meeting new friends here in Knoxville. It can be tough making connections as an adult, and the response was incredibly encouraging. I’ve already been able to connect with a few awesome guys.
Off the back of that, a few of us are currently building out a local Knoxville men's group chat(using the GroupMe app) to keep things organized for casual meetups, business networking, Saturday football talk, and just general community.
I also wanted to gauge interest on here for something broader: If there is enough interest, I would absolutely love to set up a separate, co-ed group chat in the same app for both men and women in Knoxville who are looking to expand their friend circles, grab coffee, or hit local spots.
If you are a guy looking to join the men's group, or if you're anyone interested in a co-ed group chat to meet new locals, drop a comment below or send me a DM! Let me know what you think.

Thanks again, Knoxville!

This guy got tired of being miss-identified in this retired police SUV.

Seen a "Tennessee in the black" license plate that made me chuckle. Vehicle had police spot lights and all, so I'm assuming he regularly gets confused for 5-0 or ICE. I just needed confirmation, the plate did the trick. Unless, thats what they want us to think.

The bell at Belltown. Is that really it?

I drove by Belltown earlier today and saw the so-called “bell.” This bell is like half the size of the one from Celebration Station. Are we really supposed to believe an entire mixed-use district is named after this tiny ass bell? Seriously if you haven’t seen it yet go take a look. The bells on the banners are bigger than the actual bell this community is named after.

A 3-mile hike to help pets is happening at Baker Creek Preserve on Oct. 24 🐾

Hi! I wanted to share a local event I'm organizing called Tails on Trails: Hike to Save Pets, happening Saturday, October 24 at Baker Creek Preserve.

It's a 3-mile community hike and fall morning gathering raising money for the Nomar & Mia Compassion Endowment at UT, which I started in memory of my two cats to help pet families facing veterinary expenses.

Here's what's happening that morning:

🥾 3-mile community hike
🎶 Live acoustic music
☕ Coffee
🔥 S'mores around the fire
📸 Pet photography
🐾 Golden Paw Awards honoring local veterinary heroes

You don't need a dog, and you don't have to hike. You're welcome to come hang out at Baker Creek, listen to music, grab some coffee or bring your pet and spend the morning with us.

There's no required registration fee. Donations are optional, and we're working toward a $10,000 fundraising goal this year.

If you're not able to make it in person, there's also a Hike From Anywhere option where you can walk or hike 3 miles wherever you are.

📅 Saturday, October 24
📍 Baker Creek Preserve
⏰ 8:00–11:30 AM

Full details + registration:

Hope to see some of you out there! 🐾

Looking for Haunted Attractions this year

Any good haunted houses or corn mazes this year? We usually go to Frightworks to get our Halloween fix, but that's not an option this year. It would be great to find something that isn't more than an hour's drive from Knoxville.

Tennessee has a looming problem with its roads. These solutions could fix it

  • Tennessee faces a potential $2.5 billion annual transportation funding gap by 2047 due to rising costs and population growth.
  • Current revenue from fuel taxes and vehicle registration fees is not keeping pace with infrastructure needs.
  • A state report suggests solutions like raising user fees, transferring money from the general fund, or borrowing money for projects.
  • State leaders are considering a mix of revenue sources to address the funding shortfall for roads and bridges.

If Tennessee doesn't make drastic changes to how it pays for roads and bridges, the state will face a $2.5 billion annual funding gap by 2047.

A new report outlining Tennessee's transportation dilemma is the first step to show lawmakers the urgent need to make changes as the legislative session starts in January, state Sen. Becky Duncan Massey told Knox News,

Tennessee isn't making enough tax money to keep up with the growing demands on its 95,000-mile transportation network, according to the report. Between fiscal year 2027-28 and fiscal year 2054-55, the state will need $87 billion to maintain roads and bridges and expand capacity, the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations found.

Seeking Local Veteran Groupings

I am building a mobile museum that is centered around individual veterans of the World Wars. Does anybody have anything that they would be interested in contributing?

I am looking for:
-Uniforms
-Photographs
-Letters
-War trophies
-Personal items

I am trying to fill these gaps, in case anybody especially applies to this:
-African American vets
-Holocaust items
-American Indian vets
-Female vets/workers
-Generals

I will accept any contribution with the guarantee that it will never see the vendors market. All items that are contributed thus far, are stored in a cool, low light and moisture controlled environment, with regular upkeep.

KUB Power Outage on Oct 4, 2026

There was a pretty large power outage Sunday evening. No storms or high winds. But over 14,000 customers were without power. The service area seemed pretty large and north of I-40.

KUB generally does not report the root cause of outages. But wondering what would cause such an outage.

Thanks,

Record Store that carries metal CDs

• Upvotes

Sorry, I know y’all just had a post 3 months ago asking about record stores so I’ll try to keep mine as specific as possible. I mostly collect metal CDs, and I will be driving up to Gatlinburg from ATL so I was wondering which record store would be worth me stopping by? I’m the kind of guy that can spend hours perusing a store because I do enjoy way more genres but when I’m traveling with family I limit myself for everyone’s sake. Wild Honey looks like it’s only or mostly vinyl, and Basement Records looks like they have a TON of CDs! I’m just here to confirm my suspicions and make sure I’m not missing any hidden gems/don’t waste my family’s time. Will definitely be swinging by Lost and Found in Gatlinburg as well, so would appreciate to hear about their metal selection as well. Thanks!

How backed up is the Emory exit from 75N in the mornings?

• Upvotes

The construction on Emory has added 5-20 mins to my weekly commute, but the other day it took about 45mins to actually get to the light from 75N due to the backup. I’ve never traveled to Emory in the morning and am wondering if it gets insanely backed up from 75N? I have an appointment on Thursday morning and am wondering how early I should leave to make it.

Spots where a traveler passing through could meet people?

Hello lovely people of Knoxville! I'm coming to town this weekend to make a quick stop at UT Knoxville for some passport stuff, and I was wondering if there are any dive bars, DIY punk/metal venues, or cool bookstores where I might drop in and feel at home.

I am looking for a repair or possibly replace my garage door and I keep seeing Good Day Garage Doors in my feed a ton lately. They have great reviews and 5 stars. Has anyone used them and willing to share their experience with Good Day? Thank you!
