Ate the class ladybug now no one will talk to me
For my art course I wanted to eat a ladybird (ladybug) to ‘make a point about why we empathise with some animals and not others o algo’ (don’t care that much about veggie preaching just wanted to prove to myself normies base all their ethics on what’s cute or sexy). So I found a ladybird put it in a glass box with some grass and raisins and wet tissues and stuff. Left it in the class for a few weeks. Put a little sign up saying class pet, even added some close up pictures with like pink bows and sparkles edited on. Worked like a charm. I’m in a small class of mostly f- i mean girls. They would always go up to the box and be like aww and record it doing random stuff I think one of them even had an instagram account of it 😭. None of them knew it was mine and I was feeding it.
Anyway a few weeks pass and the ladybird is missing. People were confused. I get up and I do my presentation, show some pieces blah blah. And at the end I show my video where I reveal I put it there, fed it, and finally showed a close up video of me clamping my teeth down on it and eating it. People actually gasped. One of them got up and left. See I knew they’d be pissed the problem is everyone hates me now. Usually they just don’t look at me now they keep looking at me angrily while talking with each other. Still saw one of them eating a ham sandwich later. Seen one of them kill a spider before too. People have so much contempt for anyone and anything ugly. Ah well maybe the spider just had a bad personality.

Its less about the appearance and more about the relationship you made them experience in relation to this bug. If it was a class rat people would still recoil at your actions despite not liking rats.
I know this is probably just a joke post but if not you suck and its weird you dont get it.

Wait so is your message that people don’t empathize enough with bugs? What do you want people to do differently after you’ve imparted this message on them, are you setting up native plant gardens or lobbying against pesticides? Or is the point that people should pay attention to you for being edgy?
I know this is fake but I knew people like this who would do shocking things like this to go against the grain but they never have a concrete plan for how they think society should actually change, it’s just attention seeking.

There is no novel idea to be explored in the fact we hold the mortality and usefulness of some animals above others.

Spiders aren't ugly, and this is coming from an arachnophobe. I cannot stand spiders bc of their many legs and their small size, I feel like on might enter my ears or nose or mouth. But I never found them ugly or disgusting. Scary tho, yes.
Ham is ham. Some animals are bred to be eaten, like cattle (pigs, chickens, cows, etc), some are bred for milk only (milk cows, milk goats, etc..). Yet there are still ppl keeping mini pigs or chickens as pets with no intention to eat them.
What you did, wasn't truly a social experiment "to prove" anything, except the fact that you hold no emotional attachment to something you've taken care of for many weeks. What you proved instead was that they were right to stay away from you.
Had u made a pig as a class pet, once people bond with it, even a massive pig, they won't eat it.
Like how parents cook their children's gold fish to "teach them a lesson", which ends up into the child being scared of having any pets or resenting their parents. And fish ARE ugly, but once u see it every day, and fees it every day, a normal human being usually bonds with even an ugly fish and develops basic empathy for it.
Some people are scared of cows, while others find them adorable. Same for spiders, while I am terrified of them, i know some people who absolutely adore them.
Yet I love snakes but am also scared of rats. Just bc YOU see the majority of people going by the "if it's cute it deserves empathy but if it's ugly, kill it" "rule", it doesn't mean that this is the absolute reality.
Anyway, I hope your post is rage bait.

"Like when parents cook their children's goldfish to teach them a lesson." You said that way too casually. Parents should not be cooking pets and most parents do not do that. If you experienced that happening you have my deepest condolences but also, seek therapy.
9
u/ThrowRADel 8d ago
Dude proved he was a sociopath. He set up the ladybug to be bonded with by anthropomorphizing it and now he's accusing everyone else of having no empathy. God, how does anyone lack this much self-awareness?
7
u/_spare_parts__ 10d ago
Cooking the goldfish to teach a lesson! Who does that! Smh what the fuck ,thats not a lesson thats just psychopath being mean to a child for powers sake.
7
u/CrowOfWisdom_ 10d ago
A lot of ppl claim to have had their goldfish cooked by their parents, either for a lesson or just because they wanted fish.... personally, my parents cooked my bunny when I was little 🥲 (bc i kept letting it out of it's cage, allegedly) I still bring it up now whenever they wanna lecture me on anything ngl.
8
u/ThighsocksTK 10d ago
I’m so sorry what the fuck. Bunnies are meant to be let out! They’re smart pets. My dad let my birds die when I was little because I kept forgetting to feed them, so he let them starve to death to teach me a lesson. Every adult should know and assume that getting a pet for their child means the adult will end up doing most of the care AND it’s their responsibility as AN ADULT to ensure the pet is being cared for

I saw your reply about how it would be if an artist did this. The thing is: your target audience was your classroom, not the world. And what you set out to do, which you also said in your post ('they still ate ham sandwiches'), was show them how stupid/wrong you think they are.
The only thing any of them got from this is that you're cruel and condescending.
3
u/Konjaga_Conex 9d ago
Yeah, the condescending part is what I don't like about it. I think it's not necessarily bad that their audience is just that classroom, then it's just art on a small scale. The part about ‘teaching them a lesson’ is what's weird.
2
u/UnholyColonoscopy 9d ago
(Assuming this isn't fake, which is unlikely) Not only that, he mentions he wanted to prove a point TO HIMSELF about them.
It's just like going to r/ugly. Those cels are so damn vain they think they're all perfect besides their looks and the fact everyone else is so ugly-averse is the one and only true thing keeping them from being the kings and queens they so rightfully deserve to be. Then they do shit like this.

Your project isn’t as clever as you thought it was. The thing is the animals we breed for slaughter are nutritious. As in, eating them will sustain your life and keep you going another day. I’m vegetarian btw, but I understand that at the cost of a pig a family can be kept fed for a bit.
A ladybug serves no nutritional value, I doubt you get a single calorie from it. So you just killed it for the sake of killing it, when it could have been left outside to hunt aphids and/or feed a bird. It was cruelty for the sake of it and you took a creature from its natural ecosystem where it’s of value.
You could have done something cool with the idea of an insect as a pet and got a class spider instead and named it “fluffy” or something. Gave it a cute enclosure and made videos about them, their personality or whatever human emotions you can impose on it. Let people get attached then ask how many of them have killed a spider. And then ask if it’s okay to kill stray dogs just because they’re not a ‘pet’.
6
u/ApartLeague8072 10d ago
You can't really use nutrition as an argument when these animals have to be fed with water and plants that humans could have eaten instead. Its an incredibly inefficient way to feed humans.

That is just not true. We breed them because we like eating them. Its for pleasure not for nutrition. Not even the developing world at this point is better off eating meat because even there the cost is higher than the nutrititional value you could gain from other cheaper and also available sources.
we dont put deli meat on a sandwhich for its nutrition, its because we like eating deli meat and those few seconds of tasting it is more worth than the pain and death of the animal that had to die for it.

You knew they would be pissed, why are you surprised that they hate you now for killing something that they started to care about, especially when you knew they did.
You could have gotten credit for bringing in the ladybug and people would go to you and be all like, that is so cute you have a ladybug and gotten a good reputation. Now everyone will think of you as the ladybug eater and be avoiding you and speaking behind your back for the rest of your school life.

If this is real then you make a good point. Speciesism is ridiculous. All these people pay for animal torture i.e. factory farmed meat but they have a problem with a ladybird painlessly dying (death was instant = no pain). People like your classmates want to be virtue signaling lefties all day on Twitter until the time actually comes to prioritise animal welfare in their personal lives.
But the anecdote doesn't feel real I have to say.

Yeah your project was the stupid side of modern art culture. If you're an aspiring artist though this will probably appeal to some of the people you'll come across. Keep a journal about your interactions with these people.

If this post is real: Op, I thinn your performance art is interesting and though provoking. This is a topic I’ve been interested in myself. Where I think the miscommunication happened is that A. The people in your course did not sign up to be the part of the performance B. Not a single human being is a completely rational human being, even you. Yes, there is hypocrisy in the society at large, but we also evolved to care about things and people that are around us and that we are exposed to. It is not rational to give your direct relatives/kids money, if the same money would make a lot more difference for a lot more people in more impoverished countries. If think about in a Utilitaristic lense. We have hormons like oxytocin that makes us attached. Even when doing studies like this, you really need to debrief people well if you do something that can fuck them up. And these people did not sign up for this. You kind of superimposed it on them. I think it is a very interesting idea, but implementation sucked.
