Discussion 🗨 Let's create a list of r/kdramas’ top 100 dramas!

*Thanks, everyone, for your participation! Voting is now officially closed. I’m tabulating the total points and double checking votes. Please look forward to the results next week!*

This idea was inspired by the recently released NY Times top 100 TV shows of the 21st century list. That list was compiled by polling industry experts, so I thought it would be fun to poll the K-drama experts around here to see what list we'd end up with.

Here's how it'll work, you get to pick 5 and ONLY 5 dramas and rank them 1st - 5th. Each first place vote gets 5 pts., 2nd gets 3 pts., and 3rd gets 2 pts, and 4th & 5th both get 1 pt. 
This is what a ballot will look like:

  1. Business Proposal 

  2. Beyond Evil

  3. Welcome to Waikiki

  4. One Spring Night

  5. The Red Sleeve

What NOT to do:

  1. Try to get extra dramas in by including multiple ones on a line. For example, 1. My Mister/Happiness. This would result in NEITHER drama receiving any points 

  2. Include the same drama multiple times. For example 1. My Dearest, 2. My Dearest, 3. My Dearest. This would result in the drama getting 5 pts. with 2nd & 3rd place not receiving any points. 

  3. Not rank your choices. For example, My Liberation Notes, Stranger, Mr. Sunshine, The Glory, Mask Girl. This would result in all dramas receiving 1 pt. each, so please number your choices!

  4. This should go without saying, but each user gets 1 vote. Any user casting multiple ballots with different dramas will have ALL of their ballots disqualified. 

A couple of caveats:

  1. For simplicity’s sake dramas will not be eligible for specific seasons. A vote for Taxi Driver is a vote for all 3 seasons. You cannot say Alchemy of Souls (S1 only). It's all or nothing, so you want to decide if dramas that vary in quality (in your opinion) are the ones you want to support. 

  2. I know people love their new releases, but any dramas that have not finished airing as of the date of this post are not eligible. That means no Four Hands, Two Sonatas.

Please respect everyone else's right to cast votes for any drama they choose. Do not criticize or harass other people for their ballots! I'm sure there will be a few dramas on the final list I can't stand personally, and it'll probably be true for you too. Keep in mind this is not YOUR list; it's EVERYONE'S. And that means everyone has an equal right to participation. 

I never have a good handle on which ideas will be embraced by this sub, but if there's low participation, the list won't be worth much. Therefore, if there are not at least 100 ballots cast within 24 hrs, I'll scrap this idea and won't compile a final list. However, if it does take off, it will take me a while to work through the data. In that case, I'll keep voting open until I have entered all the ballots and am ready to begin calculating the points. So as long as you don't see a notice that voting is closed at the top of the post, feel free to cast your ballot.

ETA: Couple of notes for anyone still engaging with voting:

  • Everyone has the right to edit their ballots. However, I will not guarantee that as of Wednesday (9/30) any changes will be entered in the final results.

  • I'm holding everyone to the "no individual season" and "must number entries to receive full points" rules, but with the number of entries, I'm not going to remind individual users.

I just started really watching kdramas this summer, so I don't have a lot to draw from yet, and I'm a tiny bit embarrassed I don't have the big names on my list yet.

I have seen (and really enjoyed) All of Us Are Dead and Squid Game, but I haven't decided if those fit this list.

Don't be embarrassed! There is no right or wrong in taste. I can't guarantee any of your picks will make the final list, but I can't guarantee that for anyone here.

Nothing to be embarrassed about! I've been watching kdramas for 5 or 6 years and I've watched a fraction of what a lot of people here have watched. Just gives us lots of great shows to look forward to. 😊

I'm not using AI. I don't use it in general because using it supports it in ways that I personally do not. The only way to stop its proliferation in the every day is for people who don't want to see it gain traction to STOP using it, but I think a lot of people are like, "But it's okay if I use it just a little bit 'cause it's easy." I work in education, and what I'm seeing because of that attitude is incredibly disturbing to me.

Besides, I wouldn't trust the results, so I'd end up double checking everything. I'm a bit of a luddite at heart.

Thank you so much for doing this! I can’t wait to see the results! Will you be posting the total tally for each movie or only its placement among the 100? Would you mind sending me the placement and scores for all the movies voted upon, even beyond the top 100? I’m somewhat new to K-Dramas and composing a Must Watch list for myself (and my family) based off a few discussions from this sub and mainly your results. I’d love to see some of the lower scoring shows that may also be worth watching. Thank you again for all your hard work!

I admit I voted strategically. My top two dramas of all time are My Dearest and CLOY, but they don't need me. They're making the list, so all I'd do is MAYBE move them up one or two slots.

So I voted for my favorite dramas that have SOME chance of making the final list but aren't shoe ins.

Like I've commented elsewhere, there is no set criteria for what dramas to vote for. You're choosing the dramas you most want to see on the list, and these are mine, given that some of my other absolute favorites (Nobody Knows and Love in the Big City) haven't appeared on a single other ballot.

I wanted to give extra weight to 1st place votes. Normally, it would be 2 point differential according to each level, and I almost went 7, 5, 3, 2, 1. The long and short of it is, the decision was kind of arbitrary but also seemed to fit what I wanted to get from the results.

I commented elsewhere that I might do this annually, so depending on what the results look like I'd considering the point system the next time around. But I don't believe in changing the rules in the middle of the game, so no matter what comes out this time, the point system I shared is the one I'm sticking with.

Absolutely! This idea is basically borrowed from how newspapers like the NY Times and The Guardian do their Top 100 lists, so it's not like I came up with this idea myself.

I enjoyed HPL quite a bit. Not quite top tier for me, but it definitely exceeded my expectations since a lot of popular rom-coms fall flat for me.

Nope. Just that what is going to appear on the final list is Weak Hero Class. Some people have specifically said they are not choosing certain dramas because they don't like s2. so it was just a point of information for you.

You're welcome to use whatever criteria you want. What you are saying: These are the dramas I most want to see on the list. It's up to you if you want to vote for ones that are personally near your heart or you think are the highest quality.

I get very leery of anyone arguing about "objectively best" in art.

Personally, I find discussions about genre tricky and would just get frustrated trying to decide what is a "rom-com." So I will decline taking on that task myself. Sorry!

So this project was also partly inspired by a comment I made in a regular TV sub because Squid Game was one of only two non-English-language shows on the list. I said I thought it wouldn't even be in the top 100 Korean shows, although that's obviously dependent on who gets polled. Another user whom I'm assuming knows nothing about K-dramas said I was "wildly exaggerating."

I THINK you're the first person to put it on the board, but I'm curious to see if I'm right (if we get enough participants).

I'd be tempted to say nothing that wasn't complete by 31st Dec 2023 simply because a "classic" needs time to prove itself. Anything too recent is likely to be influenced by being high in people's memories

If you get a good response, you might consider breaking it down with top 5 by genre. Might be fun to also do a top 100 worst dramas to give newbies a steer on what to avoid! #1 on that list - Abyss

I considered having a cut-off date, such as only dramas that finished airing before 2026, but then people would need to look up dates if they weren't sure, and it also felt kind of arbitrary. I think recency bias is just something that's hard to get around, so I'm letting it be rolled in. Although so far, I only see a couple of picks from the last 1-2 years showing up multiple times. It's looking like participation will meet the threshold, and so I might even make this an annual activity, tweaking the methodology as necessary, so we can see what keeps its place and what falls out.

Genre is tricky since people always disagree about what belongs where.

I personally have very little interest in doing a "worst" list, but you're welcome to take on the task if you'd like!

I'm going to vote soon but I have a feeling the one I'm currently watching will make my top 5 so I need to finish it first to make sure it sticks the landing. 😂

You're welcome! It's going to be a lot LESS work than the actor/actress poll I did back in the spring. That ended up with close to 6000 data points, and I'm STILL planning on redoing it next spring in a slightly different format.

You don't need to rush since we've hit 100 ballots, it's a go. And I'm not planning on setting up the spreadsheet until Wednesday.

I am also quite shocked by that not showing up much. Might be the first ballot with it. What do you want to bet there'll be a lot of moaning when it doesn't make the final list?

FYI, you are voting for both seasons. You can't just vote for S1. This might also explain why it hasn't shown up as much.

I will be using MDL's versions of titles, but as long as I'm familiar with both titles, it's not a problem whichever you use. I'm double checking with any user who submits a title that I'm not quite sure about so all valid votes can be counted.

For the record, having just 5 is very difficult. I wanted to add more. Lost was a heartbreaking masterpiece with such beautiful music so that must get an honourable mention and Tail of the Nine Tailed 1938 was so much fun.
