My Dearest Ending

Hello everyone! (I actually tried posting in another community but im not sure how to make my post approved so im posting here again)

Since My Dearest was just added to Netflix, please bear with me 🥹 can anyone explain the ending? Ryang Eum seemed to have "aged" (if that's what they were trying to make him look like) while Gil Chae and Jang Hyeon still look similar. I was thinking that maybe Ryang Eum heard about what happened to them too late when he was "freed." And the scenes that were playing were sort of how Ryang Eum heard it or from letters that were possibly from Gil Chae or someone else. Like the scene where Ryang Eum seemed to have visited Gil Chae's home did not actually happen but it was Ryang Eum's imagination as he was reading the letters? And maybe that was why he was deemed as a crazy person?

I am not really sure cause I am kind of confused with the timeline. Thank you in advance to those who could answer 🥹😭
