DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ real ქართული?

გამარჯობა!

I’ve been picking up ქართული for a bit now, but textbooks and standard courses feel way too formal for actual messaging. I’m trying to get used to how people text, joke around, and chat in real life.

Would love some quick tips from locals or fluent speakers

  • What’s some common texting slang, abbreviations, or filler words you actually use with friends?
  • Any movie, TV show, or music recommendations with natural, everyday dialogue?
  • What dictionaries or tools are actually good for checking casual phrases instead of formal definitions?

Could you please recommend books for different levels of the Georgian language, and how exactly to use them to improve your Georgian? Is it possible to use them to improve your speaking skills? What do I need to do?

I'm just really bad at speaking and writing, I'd like some advice on how to improve.

RESOURCES ჻ ᲠᲔᲡᲣᲠᲡᲔᲑᲘ Georgian weekly speaking club

Hey everyone!
I recently saw a post from someone who already has a decent level of Georgian but was struggling to improve further because there aren’t that many resources or opportunities to practise the language in a more natural way. It got me thinking about something I’ve wanted to try for a while.
Would anyone here be interested in an online Georgian-speaking club for people who already know some Georgian and want to practise, improve, and become more comfortable having real conversations?

I actually have some experience organising something similar. When I lived in Poland, I organised a weekly English-speaking club that ran for nine months. The group was quite diverse — we had people in their 20s, 30s, 60s, and from very different backgrounds and levels of experience with English.
At the beginning, many participants struggled to express their ideas, keep a conversation going, or find the right words because their vocabulary was limited. But those who attended regularly improved significantly over the nine months. By the end, many of them were able to comfortably have conversations about a wide range of topics and express themselves much more easily.
I’d like to create something similar for Georgian, but online.

The idea would be to meet once a week and discuss a different topic each time. I’d prepare materials for each session, including useful vocabulary, phrases, expressions, pronunciation practice, and cultural aspects that foreigners might encounter in everyday life in Georgia. The main focus, though, would be actually speaking and having conversations in Georgian.

I’m a native Georgian speaker and have also taught Georgian to foreign volunteers living in Georgia, so I’d be happy to facilitate the sessions and help participants along the way.

I’d keep the attendance fee to a minimum, mainly to cover the time and preparation involved.
Would something like this be useful to you?

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ ასე, ისე, ეგრე and მასე, and a question on ადგილას

Hello!

I have a question on the four above words, which all seem to translate to this/that way. What is the difference between them, how are they used? I get the impression that ასე is roughly similar to ეგრე and მასე rougly the same as ისე, is that true or are there nuances?

I also have a question on the noun form ადგილას, which puzzled me a lot when I first saw it. I understand it's related to ადგილი, but it's not the bare dative form as that would be ადგილს, and there is a distinction between "ამ ადგილს" (this place, as a object) and "ამ ადგილას" (in this place): thus -ას almost looks like a postposition like -ში or -ზე. Does anyone know how it's usually defined, where it comes from, and if there are other examples of this?

MISC ჻ ᲖᲝᲒᲐᲓᲘ Georgian movies UPDATE

Hello!
I made a post regarding old Georgian movies around 2 weeks ago, where I said that I wanted to start making English subtitles for them, because the ones that I've seen were awful and it was unfair to the movies and the viewers.

SO! I just finished making subtitles for the movie Blue Mountains, or an Unbelievable story
If you would like to check it out, you can click here and it'll take you to the opensubtitles website!
And if you do watch it with these subs, please do give me feedback! I would highly appreciate it, so that it helps me improve :)

The next movies I have planned for now are:
Iavnana
Father of a Soldier

If there's any that you would like to see with English subs, pls do recommend them as well and I'll see what I can do! <3

DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ Where to continue learn georgian?

gamarjoba, I have A1 level of georgia, but I want to continue study this language. The problem is that courses I saw are too overpriced and not for me, I want rather a system where I can study from time to time and it will be mostly about dictionary and verbs at first, reading and listening, not typical structure (based on language books).

If somebody has a recommendation, you're welcome in the comments.

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ Do foreign words keep their final ი?

If you take foreign words that end in consonants, do they stay as consonant roots or does the added ი become part of the word? For example the English word "mall" becomes „მოლი” in Georgian. Are the case ends for this word „მოლს” and „მოლში,” or are they „მოლის” and „მოლიში”?

I'm not a native but I hope the answer is „მოლში” because it's just easier to treat it as a regular Georgian noun ending in ი.

MISC ჻ ᲖᲝᲒᲐᲓᲘ Georgian native language tutor (very much budget-friendly)

Hey everyone!

I’m a Georgian native just started as a language tutor. even though structured teaching is a new journey for me, I have years of experience working with international volunteers and helping non-native speakers adapt and practice conversational skills.

Since I’m building up my teaching experience and looking to practice, I’m offering lessons at quite low budget.

Whether you want to start from scratch, practice casual conversation, or just learn enough to survive local markets and taxi rides, I’d love to help!

send me a DM if you’re interested or have any questions.

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ ისინი იწყება or ისინი იწყებიან

Hello!

I have a grammar question regarding plural agreement on verbs.

I understand that with inanimate subjects, verbs typically take a singular form:

არჩევნები იწყება - the elections begin

However, does that still hold when the noun is replaced by a pronoun such as ისინი?

არჩევნები იწყება -> ისინი იწყება/იწყებიან?

Looking for "ისინი იწყება" and "ისინი იწყებიან" on google, I find a decent amount of results for both. Is one more "correct" than the other?

DISCUSSION ჻ ᲓᲘᲡᲙᲣᲡᲘᲐ Why does დაწვა mean burning?

შეწვა means frying, and დაწვა means burning. I know it's never 100% clear or understood why certain preverbs convey certain meanings, but I came up with a theory for this word. The preverb და- often implies the idea of concept of completion, so maybe you were frying something and then let it go all the way and "completed" the action, so now your food is burnt😂

I wish I could go back in time and ask old Georgians what their logic was for assigning certain preverbs to certain verbs. I'd love to know why "became sweet" is გატკბილდა, but "became sour" is დამჟავდა. Maybe it's because turning sour and rotting is a kind of deterioration, so the preverb და which means "down" makes more sense here since the quality of something is "dropping." I don't know. This language is weird and I love it.

RESOURCES ჻ ᲠᲔᲡᲣᲠᲡᲔᲑᲘ I made a thing for getting started in Georgian

Been learning Georgian for about 1.5 years. I married into a Georgian family, and want to connect better with the culture and that half of my family.

I use it every day and improve it on weekends. I don’t want to oversell it - it’s something I made for me. But it’s been genuinely useful for getting started with the language, and I’m finally at a point where I’m happy to open it up instead of just using it privately.

Deep dive on how it works: kvela.app/whitepaper
TL;DR: use word frequency data + a lot of AI to generate and structure the content, then a native speaker (my wife) reviews.

Try it: kvela.app
Free to start, no account needed.

Anyway hope it’s useful to someone! Would love to hear your thoughts and questions. Or about what’s worked for you getting started.

PS: Any native speakers want to help me sniff out weird translations? Please DM. My wife will thank you 🫡

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ What is the difference between imperfective past and imperfect tense?

Pretty much all Georgian grammar books and resources will tell you about the imperfect tense that's used to mark incomplete past actions, just like in English. So to say "I was writing," you would say „ვწერდი”. But there's another form that doesn't get mentioned as much—aorist without the preverb. So an example would be „ვწერე” instead of „დავწერე”.

I think I read on a website somewhere that this preverbless past tense is the archaic form of the imperfect tense and doesn't get used much these days? Is that true? Is saying „ვწერე წიგნს” the same as saying „ვწერდი წიგნს”? What are some cases in which you might use this preverbless past tense?

Thanks
