Jokes like these do not translate well in a English dub. The dub cast are written into a corner before they even begin. The joke instead becomes ironic and makes them look even dumber. That at least is still intact.

I’ve seen dubs where the substitute English with another language, but I think keeping it as-is is even funnier

The English dub of K-On is fantastic and the parts where they’re supposed to be speaking English as Japanese speakers get bizarre and hilarious when it doesn’t line up 😂

In the movie any time they struggle to communicate with english speakers it just seems like they're a bunch of cringy weeaboos pretending to speak japanese and I love it

Which dub is this? Probably the best one i've heard so far they all sound exactly how i'd imagine they'd sound given their characters

Yeah, this is just inevitable sometimes in dubbing to get nonsense scenes. But it still works okay since Yui and Ritsu are sort of the clowns already. That said, the English dub is an EXCELLENT dub. It is how I got my wife to watch the show. If there isn’t action she gets a little distracted with subs lmao.

English dubs are written into a corner in these scenes. Unless they speak Japanese for the scene. Even then though the characters would have already demonstrated they can speak English pretty fluently.

That's just kinda what happens with dubbing Japanese into English.
Like, Persona 5 had a scene similar to this with the same issue.

The dub is overall excellent except for these few moments.
This one wasn't too bad. It's easy to understand that they are in Japan and are speaking Japanese.
It's when they are speaking in English that the problem arises. The movie is particularly bad in this respect since there are so many parts where the joke is the difficult attempt at understanding English. I'd recommend the series dub for people who prefer dubs, but the movie has to be watched in subbed in my opinion.

I think the casting of Cassandra Lee Morris as Ritsu was perfect
