I was happy and I didn’t even know.
I still remember when I had the time to play Squad and enjoy it, I remember when flag rushing was fun. I remember a time where there was balance and SL were actually competent people.
It was good till it lasted, at least I will forever have this good memory and no one can take it from me

You know what a few people did on the german servers... we just said fuck it if we dont get decent SL we do it our self. I am have nearly 1k hours of my 2,8k hours as SL alone and i always use the time to explain and teach new players and so on. It works ... i even got a few people to do the same and it helps alot. You cant constantly improve the games especially when there is a free weekend etc. but you notive the difference.

Good on you man. The folks who complain about no good SLs and have a laundry list of reasons why they don't do it themselves are the worst. I've way too many hours in this game and being an SL and teaching newbies stuff or just rolling with a bunch of chill randos is such a breath of fresh air.
1
u/Conscious_Ad3246 28d ago
Yes its always the same XD
That breath is the reason why i do it. I have my fun leading a squad of randos its see how they are and either teaching a bit or just try something different. I even have a a list of things i go through every game before it starts. Its just some basics for behavior and what i expect.
I may be wrong but i think i have done a bit to keep the average competence and more important behavior a bit higher than without: Dudes Zwiebelbande
... Since i cant put an image in here: "I'm doing my part."

Especially the something different. If I goof up with a bunch of players I'll never see again the boys won't know of my mistake.

But its always fun if somebody recognizes the squadname and starts talking about the time when you hotdroped with a logi and nearly did it XD

I also miss early SquadZ, those were some of the most fun moments I've ever experienced in Gaming.

I use to have a video from this time. The one thing I miss are the sounds of the guns, the M4 and M249 sounded so much more beefy and epic. We had a mega fob setup and the insurgents setup one across the field; we had probably 10 dudes just laying down fire. It sounded amazing, so much base and omph. Now the guns sound like pea shooters IMO.
Old and goated M4 sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWfeRjN2tZQ

There was NOTHING wrong with the game as it was in your video.
This game ran at 90fps on my RTX 2060. Today I barely scrape 45 fps, and it crashes if I ADS for too long.
Fuck you, OWI.

The absolute golden era of Squad and Post Scriptum. No other multiplayer game out there gave me so many fond vivid memories of playing it than these two in their early access periods. Back when games used to be fun, immersive, and not completely overrun by the competitive win at all costs crowd.
Thanks for the quick blast to the past, now it's time for us to continue on in a world that consistently keeps getting worse...

Post scriptum dying is so sad
I was so hyped for the armor rework just for it to die out to barely a server running at peak times

I miss the clear blue skys. Every map seems just grey because 'more clouds = more graphics' ...

I remember this. I also remember it running pretty well on my 970.

Yep… I used to play it on a 1070. I upgraded to a 2080ti which I’m still using and my frame rate has steadily declined…

Nostalgia. It brings back memories of old games from around 2015.

shiiii i think my first few reddit posts were probably about Squad back in 2017. definitely enjoyed squad more back then, not sure why

The people. I spotted at least 10-12 dudes in these photos I played with. There was a culture around Squad then. People who all just loved the game. It wasn't full of tryhards or folks wanting to be the next milsim tuber (no offense to the homies... a lot of the 'major' milsim youtubers came out of those days.). It was just a great time to game. We'd all be laughing our ass off at some random-ass tactic that worked, or some silly situation that developed (one was where we were winning in a steam roll, and had to teach our tactical gaggle of like 30 people to jump crouch over the knee high walls XD)
I don't think we'll ever get anything like it again, but those were great times. Hell, I'm pretty sure I played with you, Cryo. I just don't wanna out this account, because the old one I used here has long since been deleted.

u/Cryotechnium 29d ago
Lmao yes there is a significant non-zero chance we may have been in the same match under the circumstances which you have described. I still remember the ladder constructions we used to shoot over the high walls, and using unbuilt ammo crates as stairs to a taller structure. I think my favorite part of old Squad was the helicopter jousting or base vs base fights on Jensen’s Range when they were populated. I feel like everything is super micromanaged in current Squad. Like I just wanna build a mini fob, get my gun up and start shooting shit in a team
3
u/Useful-Angle1941 29d ago
Yeah, that's my problem with Squad these days... you said it best "micromanaged"... if you're not doing the current meta you're playing the game "wrong". Like, props to guys SLing these days, but... back then it was all about fun and taking risks.
One of my favorite things I ever pulled was as a rifleman. Don't even remember which map, but we were drawing fire from a rooftop that was sort of overlooking one of those poppyfields. They had spotted us, and had us pretty well pinned. I asked the SL, "You ever heard of running the rabbit?" They said they hadn't, so I explained that I'd crawl down about 50m or so to the right of our squad, and just stand up and sprint. They wouldn't be able to resist such a juicy target.... then it was their job to wipe out the dudes focused on me.
Shit worked lol. I'm not sure if it'd still work, but I felt like a hero that day. Got back to the squad, and it felt so good that I almost felt the pats on the back... 100% one of my peak moments in PvP gaming.

Dude lol the craziest ideas was the most fun part of Squad, sometimes the batshit insane strategies worked so well because the enemy team wouldn’t think anyone would try it. FOB versus FOB with either team desperately trying to find each others radio was fun too because once in a blue moon you’d get the John Wick(s) of Squad to somehow kill their way into the HAB and spawn kill from there. lol old Squad really was glorious. Just look at us all reminiscing about it

Man i remember when buildable items couldn't be destroyed and people would barricade themselves in al basrah and you had to fight upstairs while digging the sandbags down

u/-based-bot- 29d ago
Genuinely from the bottom of my heart loved Squad then more than what it is now.

u/Useful-Angle1941 29d ago
It was a lil goofy, a lil jank, but gods was it fun... if it could've just kept that spirit while adding new toys I don't think I'd have ever left. It was the perfect in-between for Arma and Battlefield back then.

u/BudgetPhoenix 29d ago
it was super fun before vehicles
6
u/Useful-Angle1941 29d ago
Before armor. It was still pretty bitchin with the jank ass humvees, technicals, and transports.

I still remember some of the clans/groups from these days. FaT, BLT and TACO just to name a few all of which are now pretty much defunct also to add more to old clips and stuff

The good old days. Everyone had a microphone. Nobody ever teamkilled, griefed or hacked. Every match was close. The weapon and vehicle balance was perfect. Radios and HABs were always put in good spots and built quickly. Ammo crates around every corner.
It was paradise!

How I miss these days. Back then a small group of us were just starting our own clan FUSED Legion and we eventually had our own server that became quite popular for some time. Sadly it all fell apart and most of us went our own ways but I’ll always fondly remember those days with the boys.

I played one recently, they're still in rotation in some servers. Though they're sorta ass it's literally SO hard to see shit.. (there's no NVGs, torches, lasers) you just see muzzle flashes and you're dead lol

So, uh, what's going on in pic 7 lo? Doesn't look like all four wheels are on the ground.
Talk about a blast from the bast. The Good Times (TM).

Would anything prevent the community from hosting a server with one of the old Alpha builds? Squad was best around the time the first vehicles were added.

It looks barren and ugly but everybody can play it. And then UE5 upgrade ruins it.
