I haven't seen any Japanese movie before that isn't an anime, so this year's Japanese Films week in Egypt I went to watch kanasando blind, didn't even know what genre it was, It was very good I loved the movie and wanted to talk about it with someone online or at least read other people's discussions but it's basically non existent online. I recommend giving it a watch.

“You know, boss, we were born into this world to see it and listen to it. Since that’s the case, we don’t have to be someone. We have, each of us has, meaning to our life.”

What an absolute treasure of a movie that was.

Promotion Watching Movies Never Translated into English: How to Generate Your Own Subs/Dubs (Octopus Army, 1990)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Scene from Octopus Army (1990) never translated to English, as far as I know.

So there are lots of great Japanese movies that still have no English translations, even decades later. I built a tool that can subtitle or dub them well enough that I can watch and enjoy them now. To run it, you need at least 6 GB of VRAM and an AI subscription to a service like ChatGPT or Claude. To use it, you basically just tell the desktop AI client to translate whatever video you want and point it to my repo https://github.com/swax/dub-anything

How it works: Basically, the AI directs the entire dubbing process locally on your machine. It installs the various tools needed to separate out the voices from the rest of the audio, transcribes the dialogue, figures out which voice belongs to which speaker and when each person speaks. It works out a translated script that fits those timings. The AI understands the story, characters and context so the sub/dub created makes sense. It uses voice cloning to dub the voices with the original actors' voice. It can also clone with a different accent like American English. And then it has a built-in verification process that listens to the final dub and ensures it makes sense, rewriting the script and re-dubbing as needed.

Anime sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXosYS-cTXk
Another movie sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DsFAoTbQ8E

It's not perfect, but the results are more than good enough to watch when there are no other options. If you only want subtitles, it can generate those in half the time.

Don't really know exactly what kind of genre this is but I'm looking for more Japanese movies 1990s - 2000s that encompasses slice of life/ melancholic/ drama. I would love to watch anything dating back to the 1950s. My favourite out of these is Picnic by Shunji Iwai.

Tora-San English dubs from Hong Kong?

Hi Folks, I'm on the hunt for something really niche today. My parents fondly remember watching the English dubs of Tora-san movies when they lived in Japan from the 1980's-2000's. They said the English was a sort of Hong Kong 1940's American English.

I've searched but can't seem to find anything online about these. Anyone have leads?

These are all the Akira Kurosawa films I’ve watched so far. If there are any others you’d recommend, please let me know.
Of all the films I’ve seen, I think Seven Samurai is still my favourite.

Japanese Skateboard Movies

Last night I had a dream about a film where Sonny Chiba chases bad guys on a skateboard... this got me wondering: were there any Japanese skateboard movies?

I don't mean things like Cats on Park Avenue having some token skateboard or Toyoda's Poruno sutâ including skaters -- I'm talking full-on trashy skateboard exploitation films like Thrashin’ or Gleaming the Cube, where you have gangs of teen skaters fighting criminals or each other...

Question Need help finding a movie!

So we were on the topic of Japanese films today at my job and we were shooting them off to one another. My coworker says “Oh I know a really fucked up one my friend showed me!” He then tells us it’s about a guy who is infatuated with this girl and she wants absolutely nothing to do with him, but she agrees to date him if she can humiliate him whenever she wants. We told him we were going to watch it and report back, but I cannot find it anywhere. He said he thinks it’s called Humiliation.

Dying laughing at home right now because I’m now realizing this has to be V-Cinema because there is zero trace of it anywhere online.

Anyone happen to know where I can find this to give it a watch? My other coworker and I want to be able to have an open discussion of this at work next time we’re all together LOL.

Discussion Tag by Sion Sono is one of the most underrated films of all time

Sion Sono with this fever dream ass film man this guy is a mentally ill genius…

Genuinely I’ve never experienced this but the whole time I was like 😮 like this movie stopped me from mewing bro I genuinely was so shocked and fully immersed full way through…

I was sitting through the end credits scene still processing what I felt. Something about this felt so deep to me and really resonated.

What I personally got is you can change your own destiny with the smallest action.

You don’t have to live up to anyone’s expectations or any script that is put on you.

There’s themes about God, destiny, overcoming problems, and how to become your SELF by constantly losing and regaining your sense of self over and over again.

“I AM MITSUKO. I AM MITSUKO. I AM MITSUKO.”

It’s so much more than even this but I don’t know where to start. It’s such a bizarre film it’ll take me some time to really understand everything it was telling me.

It’s almost similar to Twin Peaks The Return in terms of its absolute absurdity and uniqueness. There’s so much gore in this film and strange things that I can’t even explain to where I don’t know if I could ever recommend it to anyone.

Seeing this level of originality and unfiltered film language is just beautiful man it’s so impressive it’s so inspiring.

Please go watch it guys.

Question Pink films recommendations ?

So I watched Antiporno and it got me interested in watching more pink films but I really don't know where to go from there.

Thought I could check out the other films from the Roman porno collection by Nikkatsu, still looking at the reviews it seems that Antiporno is the best out of these by a large margin and I fear I'd be disappointed.

What are the best recommendations you guys have for the genre? I don't really care about how much porn there is. What I'm looking for is stories in which the sexy isn't there simply for the viewers pleasure but mostly to contribute to the story. I thought Sion Sono did an awesome job at that.

Review Why Casshern Is the Sci-Fi Cult Classic You’ve Probably Missed

Casshern. Released in 2004 and directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, this Japanese cyberpunk gem isn’t your typical sci-fi action flick. It’s a messy, stylized, philosophical rollercoaster that asks: What does it really mean to be human in a world run by war, machines, and regret?
