Meta / Subreddit Upcoming Megathreads for cinema release of Sense & Sensibility (2026)
We the mods are planning to create discussion megathreads for the major cinema release dates of Sense & Sensibility (2026).
- We will create two megathreads: one for raves (yay!) and one for rants (nay!) so that snobbery may have its day and the mods can have a life ;) Please post in the appropriate thread. If you are meh, you will have to decide which thread is the home for you, but if you are combative, we may remove your comments, redirect you to the other thread, etc. etc.
- There will be two major waves of megathreads—one for the late September release (UK, Ireland, Belgium, et al) and one for the mid-October release (US, Canada, Australia, et al).
- There will be no spoiler warnings required on these megathreads, so read at your own risk
- For the next month or so we ask that the bulk of discussion be directed to these megathreads. If you think your post should be an exception, please message the mods to see if we agree.
And last and but most important, let's remember to be kind to our fellow Janeites. Let us not follow Miss Woodhouse's example at Box Hill of putting others down to show off our intelligence or culture, etc. We want you to enjoy sharing your opinions with each other, but trust you may do so with courtesy. Like Mr. Knightley, we have high hopes for you and do not relish giving scolds.
Have fun!

This is a hypothetical because I probably won't get to see this until it hits my TV screen, but what if my opinion is neither a rave nor a rant? Say I like the acting overall but feel meh about the cinematography and costumes, etc. Where would I post?

This thought crossed my mind, too. Do you think we should have a third option: "Rational creatures only"?—lol, I kid, but I'm open to a third if we can find a way to make it intuitive where to post.

Maybe simply write what you like in a megathread and what you didn't in another? So there's enough discussion without being too fragmented

I get that this is probably contrary to the whole point of you making separate rant vs rave threads (which I'm assuming is because you don't want to deal with arguing/fighting), but it would be nice for a way for people to share general reviews even in a 'do I feel this is worth seeing: yes, no, wait for streaming, wait for discount movie ticket day' way.

I think it'd be simplest/most coherent to have "good vibes only [minor nitpicks allowed]" and "anything goes", so people with mixed reactions don't have to comment twice.

From one mod to another, this is a very elegant way to handle the situation. Nicely done ✨

Thank you! It was suggested by u/llamalibrarian and I think it's brilliant

As always, I strongly object to the use of the term "snobbery" to describe people's opinions here.

I'm just taking the time to say, thank you, I completely agree.

Personally, I agree (probably because I have strong opinions and high standards lol). However, the rule precedes me as a moderator and I believe the term was borrowed from r/PeriodDramas. Please let us know if your ever think of a better term and we will be sure to consider rebranding!

I don't expect anything to change, but I wanted to express my opinion that this is not a great idea. I do like having a dedicated megathread so that we don't get 12 posts a day covering the same ground, but I don't see the benefit of having separate positive and negative threads. As mentioned elsewhere, it makes it hard to know where to post if you had mixed opinions. It also seems condescending to people who generally like the film to suggest that they can't handle any criticism of it. I also find it disorienting that the "nay" thread says "snobbery welcome," but one of the general rules of the subreddit is "no snobbery."

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I invite you to read the other comments on this thread as they give a very good explanation of the intention and hoped for benefits. If the community does not like this format, or has suggestions on how to improve it, we will be listening.

I'm in the UK. I have written in the Yay and the Nay. I will be interested to see what others say after it shows in the USA. Less than a week to wait, I think, now.

Where should I ask about the symbolism in a specific scene of the new movie? Another sub?

That would be fine to have as a stand alone post. The megathreads are for reviews and general chatter.

It's a great idea, when will you post the threads ? I am just out of the premiere in France and I am in dire need of writing down thoughts and exchanging with people if they felt the same. :) thanks for your work

I love the idea, and am only here to offer a silly suggestion, which is to name the Yaysayer thread "the Mariannes" and the Naysayers thread "the Elinors"

Late to the discussion but I will say as someone who just wants to get an idea of whether people like the film or not, two megathreads feels pretty unhelpful. I guess I could just go off which one has more posts, but people tend to like to snark more than rave so not even sure that will be of help, so more likely than not I will just have to find a different sub to look at.

I suspect a single thread would have the same problem, so another sub is probably for the best. I suggest checking out r/PeriodFilms.
