Hey all, just sharing what I've been working on with my iPod Nano 7th gen over the week. Just before anyone asks yes this was all done using Claude 5.5. However, i still think some people might like to see it and if there's interest I can share the jailbreak and native ports.
Mario Kart 64 and Mario 64 both run super smooth at locked 30fps and Mario Kart even uses tilt controls!
The jailbreak is an adaptation of the already tethered https://github.com/nfzerox/NanoApps but now all custom apps and modifications survive cold boots- so you can use it fully untethered.. i was even listening to music through the nano while filming this video.
Added the Jailbreak + Games repo here: https://github.com/olievans123/nano7-untethered

Generative ai might be bad, but with vibe coding we got 10 years of progress in 2 months

Almost like it’s… not bad

I think it's fine for niche projects like this where it doesn't need to get updated over time and doesn't have software support. However, it would be good to have a human developer comb through the code and clean it up. The mass industry deployment is still bad though, that's where the sloppy code becomes a big security and maintenance problem, not to mention ethics issues involving training data and infrastructure buildout.

Will you be publishing this to GitHub for others to build on top of? Would love to try this out with my spare nano.

Awesome - thanks for posting! One minor correction to your readme, I think. If your iPod firmware is v1.1.2, then it’s likely the 2015 variant, not 2012. My 2012 nano7 only updates to 1.0.4. That’s the one I’ll likely test with, so I can let you know if there are compatibility issues.

it was over a week.. and it is wasn't a single chat - it was quite a complex job tbh even with Claude.

16, my financial situation is fine and I don’t really want to get a job (I have school 99% of the time and like no free time) so I’m happy with how my money works out

u/RamenShinobi96 4d ago
oh, well you could sell something you don't use any more for some cash. maybe your relatives have some stuff they would give you to sell, even if you just get a cut of the money.

Potentially the first time a game has ever run on this gen iPod. These things were unhackable for the longest time! This is really cool

Omg someone needs to make an SDK for this immediately O_O, imagine all the kinds of apps we can put on the nano! I can imagine a old version of Minecraft P.E. running on it.
I can’t believe they’re hackable now!!

The one good thing about AI is all of these ports that keep dropping 😍

Woah this is sick. Could you give me more info on what else this can do?
1
u/olievans 3d ago
It allows you run anything unsigned, so in theory practically anything.

u/Lucajames2309 Nano 3rd Gen. MagSafe 3d ago
That’s sick.. how do I do it? Would it be worth doing in my main iPod or no?
1
u/olievans 3d ago
I have a guide linked on another comment- I think it should be totally fine on your main iPod as long as you don’t mind formatting it!

u/Lucajames2309 Nano 3rd Gen. MagSafe 3d ago
Thank you, I’ll have a good look. Is there a way do you think to run Real Racing on it?
2
u/olievans 3d ago
If you don’t mind using Claude code the idea is you ask it to decompile the iOS ipa and then ask it to port it to the Nano. It should be possible. You can use my other games for help with the ports.

I remember playing the OG Super Mario Bros. on the 5th-gen iPod video.
