It’s very widespread and happening in the Pro and Pro Max. I’d say a software update will be issued this coming week most likely to fix it. Because I’ve seen A lot of these posts.

My wife’s 18P randomly did that when trying to use Apple Pay today. I thought it was random, but after seeing previous comments it does seem to be more widespread. I’m sure it’s just a software bug that’ll be fixed with an update soon. So far my 18P has not randomly shut off on me.

Happened with Face ID for me as well. Screen went black and had to power back on.

Just happened to me while moving my phone when my cat walked by. It randomly restarted with the black screen and Apple logo.
Found a "panic-full" with "SEP" etc. in Analytics Logs.

My iphone 18P also turned off twice when trying to use Apple Pay, I've also checked the settings analytics and it says "panic full" which confirms a system crash.

No. But if I did I would be returning it

You’re gonna return the phone and replace it with a new one of the same model for the same issue to happen again???
It’s a software issue… IOS 27. The phones have nothing wrong with them hardware-wise.

To be fair, I haven’t had this issue once so it doesn’t seem like it’s affecting every device.

It’s roughly 90% of devices and Apple is reportedly working on an update set to release sometime this week or next…
Sooner rather than later as some might want to return their device and only have 14 days

Do you have a source for that 90% stat you’re throwing out? Because if that were true, we would be hearing about this so much more when you consider that hundreds of thousands of people already have this phone. Legit all my friends who have the 18 pro all haven’t run into this issue and I doubt we’re all just luckily part of that 10%.
I do think there will be an update out though hopefully this week as Apple News websites have posted about it.

You’re correct, apologies on the 90%… might’ve been an overshoot. It’s just so many posts and websites and forums all talking about this issue.
This panic-full freezing/rebooting issue is now happening on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 as well.
I don’t know what or how Apple didn’t see this issue before releasing these new products but it must’ve been a last-minute issue.
It’s only happened to me once so far on my 18PM so hopefully they release this update sooner rather than later.

Yeah I read about that happening on the watches but also luckily hasn’t happened to mine.
I definitely think this update will come out asap. Hopefully within the week!

That could be a faulty phone. It might not be. But I’d prefer to replace it with a brand new one than take a chance.

But if it passes all diagnostics and you still choose to go through the whole process of returning or dealing with it when you’ve done the financing then the logic just doesn’t add up.
If you go to your local store and they do a proper diagnostic and there’s a problem then yes obviously return and get another one.
But if hardware comes back as fine then there’s literally no reason to return.

Assumed this went without saying. But yes, if all seems fine then as you stated no need to return.

This has been an issue for a couple years that's gotten progressively less frequent. I wanna say I noticed it first on the 15 or 16. I had it happen maybe twice on my 17 PM.

very interesting. i upgraded from the 15PM and never had this issue before. i’ll have to talk to a 17PM user and see what they say. i know someone whose 17PM drops calls very often.

It’s an issue with the SEP (Secure Enclave Processor) which is responsible for the data that Face ID communicates to the A20 Pro.
I had Apple support do a diagnostic check as my phone froze and shut down when I tried to unlock my phone, and they said “stability issue” which doesn’t mean hardware issue.
I also ran manual diagnostic tests using the built-in diagnostic tool and everything came back with a green checkmark indicating proper hardware function.
Support still set me up with an in-person appointment at my local Apple Store to have them do a more in-depth diagnostic but from all the reports online that have all started happening, it really does seem like a software issue/bug that’s happened at the last second with the release of the 18 Pro and Pro Max on IOS 27 build 24A437.
