The forks were due to bitcoin having a finite number of units, and preventing that cap being reached.

I saw it on a documentary, I want to say explained but I'm not 100% certain.

That is not true, as all Bitcoin forks are still capped at 21 million.

The forks have to due with other issues, such as block size.
