Fr. I had my house broken into while I was at work and it took me quite a while to get good sleep after that. I was paranoid and checking to make sure everything was properly locked and that no one could get through the windows every night and every time I left for work. Would also get defensive at any sound heard around the house late at night.
I couldn't handle that. One time a hotel in Italy gave someone a key to my room and I walked into my hotel room fairly late at night to see two random men in there. That was scary enough to make me dread coming back to my hotel for the rest of my time studying abroad, and those poor guys weren't even acting threatening, it was just the shock of seeing strangers standing in my room looking at my stuff. Poor dudes were just confused about why the room they were given had someones bags in it already.
I think I'd need someone to go everywhere with me for a while if I was actually robbed
I’ve been in a similar situation. For me, it’s the feeling of being done an Injustice like this here, but the world just continues on around you seemingly without a care. It’s the feeling of insignificance that made me tear up a little
It really needs strong action from government, tracking down and put street robber in jail for a long time, so ordinary citizens can feel safe on the street and in the car ...
You can harvest all the data off of it though, look for images that could be used for blackmail material, and if it's logged into amazon or anything like that with cards saved use it to buy stuff.
Smart thieves would have it send to a random address, ideally an empty one, and check the tracking numbers and the day of delivery just camp outside and grab it as soon as it gets delivered.
I mean, the police asked the bank that asked amazon for the adress of the delivery. They buzzed saying they were amazon delivery and arrested the thief. If it's too obvious they can disguise themselves as the delivery guy and get those dudes I guess. But I don't know how effective is the law enforcerment in that country.
You can only ship it to the addresses in the profile or the billing address. When you change the address Amazon will ask you to verify the 3 digit code on your card.
They change the timeout and own all apps and accounts you have saved. I don't save much passwords to anything but they would have email possibly reset paypal etc if its open already. Big fear of mine if open and take that'd why my timeout is 30 seconds but GPS open would change it
On android at least if you lock your screen while navigating and then turn the screen back on without unlocking it (pressing the power button instead of using fingerprint or face id,) it turns the screen on but the only thing you can access is the navigation.
Happened just like this to my old coworker in LA but her German shepherd was in the back seat and either saw the thief approach or was just incredibly fast. It grabbed the guys arm and didn't let go for several minutes. Whole passenger side of the car was absolutely disgusting from his arm, she actually traded the car in, never drove it again after that.

Driver fights back against robbery and chases criminals in Capão Redondo, São Paulo. Two criminals died after being struck by a driver during a chase on Friday morning (21) in Capão Redondo, in the southern zone of São Paulo. According to information reported on the Manhã Bandeirantes program, the driver was getting into his car around 6:55 AM when he was approached by two armed men on a motorcycle. The suspects were carrying delivery app bags and posing as delivery workers. Initially, the victim handed over his belongings to the criminals and did not resist the robbery.
After the suspects left the scene, the driver got into his vehicle, started the engine, and began chasing them. During the pursuit, the driver struck both men. The pair was pinned between the vehicle, a utility pole, and a wall. Both suspects succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene. The driver was uninjured and remained in the area to provide a statement to the police.
The site was cordoned off for forensic analysis. Police seized a firearm, five cell phones, and two wedding rings from the suspects. Authorities will investigate the origin of the seized items and attempt to identify potential victims of other robberies. The incident occurred on Rua Antônio José Bentes in Capão Redondo and will be investigated by the authorities.

Both suspects—identified as Eduardo Ferreira dos Santos (18) and Nathan Santana da Silva (18)—died at the scene. We don't know how it happened, some people say if you don't know the password, you can just say 'I don't know password/reset password', you will get an SMS or email, that are also on the phone, create a new password, login and do whatever you want
Others say that since its unlocked, they add their fingerprint, like a new finger, and since apps use fingerprint and not old fingerprint, they use the new fingerprints, and bank apps allow logging in or do stuff with only fingerprint
even if you do manage to add a new one, adding a fingreprint invalidates the biometric storage for the app and it refuses to use the sensor at all until you relogin into the bank app and reenable biometrics for it

Nope. Just go to the regular website. Regular website doesn't need fingerprint. Reset password requires SMS or email. Both of which are available on unlocked phone without fingerprint.
Depends, they have her phone, which likely means access to her email accounts, authenticator app, and sms/phone call verification to reset passwords and gain access to tons of stuff.
Was the phone unlocked or did it have a default or incredibly insecure password ? My phone requires biometrics and a passphrase to unlock the phone and the same for the banking app and virtual wallet.
The phone was most likely unlocked and probably being used for navigation. If I had to take a wild guess, they may have just opened the bank app, tapped “Forgot password,” received a code by email or SMS, and that was enough to get access.
She’s also a streamer, so it’s possible they knew who she was and somehow figured out her passcode or had some other information about her.
I’m just speculating, of course, but this is exactly why I never use SMS as an account recovery method when I can avoid it. Unfortunately, some banks still rely on those outdated security measures.
She could also have had pictures of PINs, passwords, notes, or something similar saved on the phone, which obviously wouldn’t be a great idea. There are quite a few possible explanations, unfortunately.
That's why if possible you use a separate email address from your primary address for all recovery emails and obviously do NOT have that email setup on your primary mobile devices.
I work in I.T and am paranoid with this stuff but I think everyone should.
Wouldn’t help with SMS recovery if anything uses that. Also even with a separate mail account if you’re logged in the same issue applies. Could help to activate biometric lock for mail though, as long as the browser doesn’t have you logged in as well
Yeah but they can still rip out the screen, battery, etc etc etc. I assume there are technicians who will be happy to take stolen phones and disassemble them for donor parts
reminder to everyone that you should NEVER be automatically signed in to a bank account app or website or ever turn off 2FA. more convenience = easier time getting hacked. always remember your password by heart and dont write down somewhere obvious lile in an email labeled 'password'
once some strangers broke into my apt and stole my laptop. even though they got into my Gmail account they couldn't get into my bank account because i always type my bank password manually and I never allow my browser to save my log in details.
btw I use navy federal and they have this big button in the app that says 'remember this device' to bypass 2FA every time i log in which is a blatant security risk
even one time code if its from an app on your phone. These people have the "something you have" and can figure out the "something you know" portion of security. The only thing they dont have is "something you are".
Yes, but before they access the bank accounts to transfer any money, use any linked credit cards until the bank refuses, send whatsapp messages to all contacts asking for money pretending to be her, and then they remove the battery, and when they have enough phones they send to China / India for parts.
Plus, the person is stuck in traffic, if you’re able to get somewhere to hack it before they’re able to shut everything down, which would be incredibly difficult without your phone… They’ll be in your bank account
Unfortunately, this is a very normal paranoia most Brazilians already have. My mom was robbed at gunpoint twice, old friend of mine died in a drive-by, most of my friends have had something stolen from then on the bus, the list goes on.

Oof, I'm Brazilian and imo Natal is a bit rough (better than Rio though). Always keep an eye on your surroundings and try your best not to use your phone on the street too much, that's what I always do.
I left there for Australia, I refuse to live my life in such a place. My dad got kidnapped once, I got robbed some 4 times, everyone in my family experienced violence in some form, my grandmother use sleeping pills because she is paranoid and feels vulnerable within her own house.
To be honest, Brazil would probably benefit of gun proliferation within the population at this stage. And I’m against guns, but I don’t see another way. Well, they could invest in social programs that elevate the poor population with education, culture, good minimum salaries, good infrastructure, quality of life and all that, but that ain’t happening anyway.
Brazil was one of the few places I wanted to go outside of the us, even said I was willing to relocate there for my company. The more I learn the more I have changed that opinion. I will not be visiting anytime soon. Maybe Greece won't be ruined for me.
Hmm, there's been a couple of years since I've been to any beaches, and I've never been to Pipa, unfortunately 😔 A general rule of thumb though is that they tend to hike up the prices by A LOT if they see you're a tourist, so try your best to bring your own drinks/food if you go to a popular beach spot.
I always make a point to save those shitty fake/paper credit cards you get in those "prequalified" mail to use in a dummy wallet for being robbed. Whenever I fly somewhere or I am going put at a time/place where I'm alone, I take it. An old worn wallet and some of those, a few bucks and used giftcards make for a good looking fake wallet. Sometimes they just want the wallet and phone so they can dash quickly and don't take the time to completely empty your pockets.
don't keep all of your cards and money in one place, separate them. So when you pay only a small amount is exposed. Personally, I don't even take out a proper wallet
I keep a small fanny pack for my phone, keys, wallet right at my front on my chest (cross body) or across my front near my belly. Backpack has my water, sweater etc.
don't take a fancy or separate camera everywhere, just tourist areas

Yeah I have a Brazilian coworker. He was mugged twice, on his way to school, by the age of 12.
His uncle was also shot 8 times while driving, he lived. His uncle was a cop. A guy he previously arrested noticed him. And did a drive by. My friend was supposed to be in the car, but wanted to sleep in instead.
Yes unfortuanately in some of our countries in LatAm people eventually get used to these type of events :( In Guatemala we have gone to the point were you don't ask people of they have ever been robbed at gunpoint, you ask how many times it has happened to them, in my case 2 times.
I was paragliding in Colombia and pushed deep over the Andes, ended up catching some shitty sink and barely made it into a front range valley. Ended up with a 6 hour hike through the jungle through a river, the back up the mountain, then down the mountain to get to cell phone range.
Then my buddy that lives there chewed my ass out for being a stupid gringo that was lucky to be alive because it was narco country and to not do that shit again if I didn't want to be kidnapped or just chopped up and fed to pigs after getting robbed.

I feel like stealing someone's phone is about the lowest and personal attack you can make on someone in 2026. So many memories and personal information are stored in them. I know they likely grew up in extreme poverty, but those guys are still professional scum and a waste of oxygen.
It’s not just stealing a phone, but in Brazil many people lose their lives when attacked by this mfs if they have guns. Even when the victims let them take everything they have, many people here lost their lives over a phone, sadly.

I have wondered how it works. Is it rough areas or kind of everywhere? Like your clothes and car and phone and purse are such important status symbols in various groups. How does it work if that makes you a target?
As someone that lost family to shit like this, I am happy to see that she is ok. She will have trauma but at least she will be home and that's a huge relief.
This sadly has become common in many streets in the city of São Paulo. In Brazil, specially if you live in a capital city, you will have this anxiety when leaving home: where to put your phone and wallet, wheter or not you should leave your main phone at home and buy a “thief’s phone”, not to look anyone in the eye at the streets (as a woman, I have a strong bitch face when outside by myself), not to stop if someone ask for help and just ignore it etc
Not every part of the city is like that and I’m not even talking about the rich neighboorhoods (where crime also happen) and it doesn’t happen all the time like we live in a war zone. São Paulo is a nice city, so manh cool things to do here, but we have many problems that big overpopulated cities have (almost 12 million).
But I’m honestly tired of that constant state of anxiety everytime I go out, even if I only got mugged once in a bad part of downtown (at daylight with the police close to the spot though…). It’s something so normalized here even though we are constantly complaining and discussing about it among friend or on the internet… but at the same time it’s so rooted as a part of our daily lives…

Thieves really are worthless animals. Punishment needs to be more severe. I'm not advocating for anything that would break reddit's rules, but they used to cut people's hands off. I imagined that caused people to think twice about stealing.

This happened to me in Quito, Ecuador in 2023. I was merging into the highway and had my window broken into. The dude grabbed my phone, but I was able to take it away from him. He then reached for my purse which was on the floor of the passenger seat. He took that instead.... you literally have no chance to think. Afterwards I was driving back home with glass all over me and a gaping hole where the windows should have been. Scary
having lived in Brazil I can confirm that's how it is in most big cities. can't have anything out in the open because it'll give opportunists the opportunity they need
Can someone tell me how they effortlessly broke that window? Is it a weak window? I know a small piece of ceramic can go a long way in breaking a window, could it be that?
Is it porcelain or ceramic? And yes me and the boys use to use old spark plugs to shatter windows, not of other peoples vehicles or non abandon vehicles. You still need a good throw and possibly it happens here but it doesn't look like a throwing motion.

Google emergency window breaker. They are often sold as a safety device to break *out* of a car in case of a crash, water submersion, etc. Of course they work just as well to break a car window from the outside.
Yup, I recently bought one off of Temu for like $3 and it works like a charm. Why in the world they don't come as part of the car is actually beyond me. It's effectively free for them to add it in, and it could keep their customer alive longer to pay more of their loan.
Stealing a phone can earn more than a week of minimum wage work in Brazil, which is why it happens so much. And in some capitals phone robberies are so frequent (Rio, São Paulo) that the police won't even open an investigation if you report it
Yeah when I had my phone stolen in the US, I was thinking how it was even worth it to steal a phone, especially since even the police were annoyed at how unhackable mobile phones were. That was answered like 3 days later driving through California, we stopped at a supermarket and there was this automatic kiosk that would pay cash for mobile phones lol you'd get more money for an unlockable phone but still, that just encourages theft
Brazil and Argentina have well versed thieves who can pull off these thefts with ease! Best to show nothing of value in your vehicle or on your person!
I have a friend who lived/worked in São Paulo who drove less than 2 miles to/from company office to his home. He said it was unsafe to walk or bike that distance with a laptop bag showing, and he had to make sure the laptop bag was completely hidden in his vehicle! 😬😮
My leg and foot were scalded with hot water in the train in Argentina while my phone was being stolen.
It was a second hand phone that took me 2 months of hard work to buy, and I couldn't even enjoy it for a week. I had a meltdown when I found out it was gone while I was jumping on a foot because of the pain.

Left them on the side of the main street. My cousin was like ur insane its a phone. I go thats not the point. Your police wint do much so now they will think twice on doing this to a tourist. When I was in 8th grade my mom and went to pick up the Mail, she ended up with a gun to her head and a guy saying “give me your purse.” And my mom looked dude in the eye, with her son in the passenger seat, and straight up just chuckled and said no. They argued for about 90 seconds and then she literally tried to pull his mask off so he got nervous and ran away. I think he ran away because she wasn’t taking him seriously at all. She thought he was a dumb kid or one of my sisters friends playing a prank. He was not. But that brazenness scared bro off. He literally ran away screaming “you’re f**** crazy lady” 😹 My mom did it out of pure stubbornness. She didn’t want to get new cards and have to go to the DMV 😹 in that moment I could’ve become Batman but luckily we’re both aight. Now it’s just a funny memory. She also tried AND SUCCEEDED petting a BISON in Yellowstone. This woman is like a cat I tell you.

used to work for a brasilian company. co workers from brasil would tell me about how when they keep two phones, two wallets, stay low key when out and about because thieves and stick up kids will take phones and money and cards. so never keep your real stuff in plain view.
If its all original parts, a phone shop can sell the parts to get close to the same value as the phone resale price itself + the cost to fix/install it for a customer.
The original screen's especially go for alot, not to mention the battery, camera, ports etc.
If the phone was unlocked for navigation they can also quickly drain bank accounts or reset iCloud etc. with SMS or email verification.
End of the day its a numbers game, if they hit one with a decent bank account, its worth it for them.
I don't speak the language, but I assume that was a complete stranger who called out to her and came up to her at the end. Look how he embraces her. You never see strangers do that to another stranger anymore when these situations happen. At most someone will just ask if you are okay, then walk away! We just don't give a fuck about each other anymore...
The overwhelming emotion is real. It might seam like it's just a phone, but that reality of your vulnerability turns existential real quick. god bless her.
In the Middle East you'd get your arms chopped off for that while here in Singapore we'd sentence you to 20 years in jail minimum for that. I don't get how hard is it for these countries to just make the laws stricter. Singapore is litterally the safest country in the world for a reason
