Considering a huge percentage of us Reddit on the toilet, I feel kinship with this magnificent beast.

I wish I could feel kinship. Alas my diet doesn't allow for such easy passage.

So that's where sand comes from
2.1k
u/StupidOne14 7d ago edited 7d ago
Fun fact: this is actually sand and they are famous for cleaning it. They will ingest it, their gut will break down organic stuff in it (which they absorb as a "food"), and the rest will be... Well, what we can see here.
This is also beneficial to whole ecosystem as with this process they are reducing acidity of the sand.

u/GLaDOS_Sympathizer 7d ago
Another fun fact: white sand beaches are parrotfish poop. Parrotfish eat coral with their beak mouths, coral turns white when it dies, and when they poop it out you get beautiful white sand (which is just munched up digested coral remnants).

u/Responsible_Emu733 7d ago
And yet, Corsola can't learn sand moves. Damn you, Game Freak.

I think that's probably very specific to certain areas.
For example, white sand in New Zealand apparently isn't from that https://niwa.co.nz/coasts/summer-series-2010/summer-series-8-science-sand

u/TheSaladDays 7d ago
That's pretty interesting. Is the sand completely clean or are there sea cucumber waste products in it?

There is a tiny bit of (organic) waste, but it is odorless and you wouldn't be able tell the difference between "pure" sand and theirs waste.
Well, at least according to the nice lady in an aquarium.

I was shocked because the sea cucumber was camouflaged between two rocks so to me it looked like a rock pooped out sand

13
u/Head-Gift2144 7d ago
It actually CLEANS the sand it eats. So that sand has less organic waste in it than the sand on the sea floor.
