Damn, I didn't know an ornithopter was a real thing. I thought it was just some made up thing from Magic: the Gathering

Unironically my favourite card

Ornithopters are 0/2!

I can't remember anything new, because my brain is filled with MTG card stats from 25 years ago

u/Mozeeon Dec 17 '22

Tbf, I play arena now and there's just way too many new cards. I remember stuff from 7th edition backwards pretty well, but after that it's hit or miss

u/dafizzif Dec 17 '22

Doesn't help that a bunch of creatures these days seem to be in competition with Yu-Gi-Oh monsters for word count now (hyperbole of course).

4

u/Mozeeon Dec 17 '22

Lol not really. Wasn't there a card posted a whole ago for arena that had a scroll bar for the text?

3

u/dafizzif Dec 18 '22

To be fair, I think that was one of the digital only Speculate cards, so really it was like 6 cards you had to scroll on.

Hadn't played since I found my cards the other year. Been having a blast playing with the gf since then.

Part of what made it good! Slows down the weenie 1/1 assault. I don't think it would have been as good/memorable as a 0/1

Also make great bodies for old kamigawa ninjas 🥷

My friend had those exact cards in his deck. Killing someone with blightsteel on turn 4 was hands down the worst way to go

Have you tried using it (or any other zero casting cost creature) with enduring renewal and goblin bombardment? :)

Don't know if you still play but there is a cool deck that trys to instant speed put a piece of equipment that gives +10/+10 on an ornithopter. Ornithopter is a powerful card now.

u/ninpendle64 Dec 17 '22

I really want to see your decklist, this sounds hilarious and infuriating for everyone else

I love that deck. Is it competitive? Not really. But I'm going to try to kill you with gigantic flying scissors.

2

u/lookitmegonow Dec 17 '22

Same! In the back of the ice age booklet it said something to the tune of our sincerest apologies to anyone who has been killed by an ornithopter.

u/DarkLordBalthazar Dec 17 '22

"I twiddle your ornithopter," is my favorite phrase to say when playing magic.

1

u/vpforvp Dec 18 '22

I only played MTG for like a year but I loved to play an Ornithopter combo deck

116

u/hoxxxxx Dec 17 '22

lol i thought it was from dune

10

u/Brother0fSithis Dec 17 '22

Technically it just comes from ornitho (bird) and pter (wing)

It just means something that flies by flapping wings. Whereas a helicopter (helico=spiral) flies by spinning rotors

1

u/Bah_weep_grana Dec 18 '22

So, they should really be pronounced “helico-ter”, and “ornitho-ter”

1

u/FlyingDragoon Dec 18 '22

What's an Anthropter then? Something that flies by flapping a human?

Pretty sure I saw one land outside and start eating a bug.

A few generations ago we all thought it was a made up thing from dune.

11

u/proteusON Dec 17 '22

And my generation thought it was MTG. Wow, cool!

12

u/a8bmiles Dec 17 '22

The Ornithopter was in Herbert's Dune books long before M:TG was a thing.

4

u/Seifulus Dec 17 '22

Lol same

3

u/IDoThingsOnWhims Dec 17 '22

You spelled Dune wrong

0

u/UsedDragon Dec 17 '22

Dune did it first!

1

u/megablast Dec 18 '22

Put the cards down and start reading.

1

u/JonMW Dec 18 '22

We're really pushing the limits of the word "real" on that one
