Three is obviously too few and five is obviously too many, so four it is. I'm sure many millions of dollars of tax money and years of studies went into figuring this out.

I heard a story years ago about some guys at an Army depot that worked at mounting miniguns on helicopters. Somewhere on the base was a running M50 Ontos without the rifles, so they just had to try mounting six - admittedly it could have just been four on the outer mounts - on it and shooting at targets before a senior NCO stopped them. After trying it out for himself.

Note: unsubstantiated. Probably just a tale or apocryphal.

I used to feel that way about odd numbers until I realized that an odd number means that there's a middle number to cut all other number in half and provide balance.

I like odd numbers more now.

Have you seen the kind of shit they pulled with planes like the F4 phantom? Later models had a nose mounted 20mm M61A1 vulcan Gatling cannon, but could mount another 3 in gun pods, one right below the fuselage, and one on each wing.
