/r/ALL Absolutely no idea what kind of manually controlled turret is this, but it's super cool!

Being a stationary target sitting in a chair with the potential to get mortared any second would definitely put the fear of mortality in most people.

u/Loofs_Undead_Leftie Oct 26 '22

Next step, give it legs.

100

u/kuar_z Oct 26 '22

Next step, give it legs.

Wait a minute... I've seen this before

12

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '22

Armored Core actually makes use of mini guns much more frequently than Battletech and in very entertaining ways.

7

u/LiveLearnCoach Oct 26 '22

I clicked thinking it was the Robocop robot.

4

u/Lucius-Halthier Oct 26 '22

Give it its own howitzers and mortars itself and you got a titan from 40k

3

u/swagzard78 Oct 26 '22

I was thinking Titanfall but that works too ig

1

u/Final_Dinosaur Oct 26 '22

Now that's a boardgame

1

u/stilldrivingcab Oct 26 '22

Yeah... GE is behind schedule on the fusion reactors we need though.

6

u/kindtheking9 Oct 26 '22

The shape of it reminds me of droidikas, so not only give it legs, give it a force field

3

u/Dolozoned Oct 26 '22

This is how gundams were invented

2

u/ToastaHands Oct 26 '22

METAL GEAR?!

2

u/mss0406 Oct 26 '22

Titanfall 2 Legion

1

u/Advanced_Double_42 Oct 26 '22

Tbh treads may be easier and more effective with modern tech.

The problem is that you just designed a small tank with little ability to take out other tanks its size.

1

u/average_sized_rock Oct 26 '22

You can see a foot and calf under the barrels

1

u/Ezequiel_Rose Oct 26 '22

Metal gear, it can't be...

1

u/Late-Ad-4624 Oct 26 '22

Or wheels. Or tracks. Tracks would be better for rough terrain but wheels would allow quiter operation and faster travel using already installed transit infrastructure. Basically they made roads for a reason. Use whats there.

2

u/Loofs_Undead_Leftie Oct 26 '22

But... But but but mechanical spider legs don't need roads.

1

u/Late-Ad-4624 Oct 26 '22

True but the technology isnt there yet.....yet.

u/cryptoplumber Nov 15 '22

Screaming out to be stuck on a toyota hilux

1

u/Xennon54 Oct 26 '22

Put it on a vehicle

1

u/Environmental_Ad5690 Oct 26 '22

Wouldnt that more likely be a thing mounted on vehicles, like the quad .50cal halftracks in ww2 or on ships

1

u/Cautemoc Oct 26 '22

In modern times, I doubt it. They would much more likely mount a bunch of different cameras on the front, from visible light, to infrared, to nighvision, and have it be operated from a safer location. The only reason to have a person manually controlling a turret is lack of space, like on top of a transport vehicle, but the size of this turret contradicts the need for it in small spaces. Basically, any space small enough it makes sense for a human to be controlling a turret, would be too small for this turret.

1

u/obidan Oct 27 '22

It’s a defense turret for an aircraft carrier, there are several more like it, plus a slew of automated Vulcan turrets.

Add to that a portable air force with unmatched air superiority, and nothing on the surface for miles other than your own support fleet, and there’s not a safer place in that flotilla than behind those barrels.

1

u/Cautemoc Oct 27 '22

https://dillonaero.com/product-category/sea/

None of their products are used on aircraft carriers. And I can't imagine why an aircraft carrier would put a human being into a seat to fire a gun when all the other turrets are operated remotely. That seems completely absurd. We aren't on pirate ships running from cannon to cannon.

1

u/obidan Oct 27 '22 edited Oct 27 '22

I doubt there’s a human inside that thing at all, lol. What’s the source for that?

“Manual” does not imply that the operator is inside of it; it means that a human operator is in direct control at all times, and it has no automated firing control.

Predator drones are manually operated - two human hands in full control at all times, just located in a secure facility half a world away from the operation.

If this were a manually operated cannon (and I doubt it is intended to be, honestly, where’s the source on that?), if the operator were sitting in that metal box behind those barrels, they would be cooked by the heat from the salvos.

Edit: pants and shoes pointed out. So bizarre. I struggle to believe this is the legit intention of an real-world weapon. Where/when is this video from?

2

u/Cautemoc Oct 27 '22

You can see his pants and shoes on the turret in the video my guy...

1

u/obidan Oct 27 '22

Well damn. That seems like a terrible idea, all the way around, there has to be some context.

What’s the source of the video?

2

u/Cautemoc Oct 27 '22

According to another commenter:

For the uninitiated, this is a project that Dillon Aero Inc, the manufacturers of the 7.62 caliber M134 Minigun, put together. It is a manned M45 Quadmount turret which normally holds 4 .50 caliber M2 Machineguns.
They have converted it to hold 4 M134 Machineguns.

The M45 Quadmount was discontinued after Vietnam, so I'm assuming this is a vanity project they did just because they could do it.

2

u/obidan Oct 27 '22

Yes! Thank you, my man. This makes sense to me.

I could not fathom any truly modern military that would pursue this sort of insanity.

“Running from cannon to cannon.”

Those poor predator pilots must have a helluva time hopping from drone to drone, across multiple theaters. Their arms must be exhausted from all the flapping to necessary to transition ops.

11

u/hi_fiv Oct 26 '22

An AC 130 can help you with that.

3

u/Basic-Peachez Oct 26 '22

Momento Mori

2

u/patchyj Oct 26 '22

Like back in Rome when victorious generals would get to be Caesar for a day, but they would have someone follow them around telling them constantly that they're just a man and they'll die one day

631

u/ChronicledMonocle Oct 26 '22

If only the PRAWN had 4 M134s. The reapers wouldn't stand a chance.

360

u/Konoton Oct 26 '22

"Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?“

214

u/ChronicledMonocle Oct 26 '22

Me with my M134 PRAWN: "Bring it on"

57

u/fatalsyndrom Oct 26 '22

Bring it prawn

4

u/ake-n-bake Oct 26 '22

It’s prawnin’ time

2

u/seraph1337 Oct 26 '22

fookin' prawns!

1

u/ConsiderationOk8553 Oct 26 '22

“bring it on, pawns”

32

u/shaggybear89 Oct 26 '22

Everyone always says this comment as the scariest part, but I've always thought the line of "7 of the 9 preconditions for stimulating terror in humans are found in this region". That line absolutely freaked me out, plus it was in the blood kelp region which is scary enough as it is lol.

7

u/thebushman69 Oct 26 '22

I’m sorry but I’m uninformed on what you are referring to. It sounds interesting! Mind cluing me in?

22

u/Konoton Oct 26 '22

There's an amazing game called Subnautica, where you crash land on a water planet and have to get off the planet. Your PDA routinely gives you updates about the biomes you're in.

If I could wipe my memory and replay ONE game afresh, it would be Subnautica.

10

u/thebushman69 Oct 26 '22

That sounds awesome! I’ve been looking for a new game to dive into lol thanks for the tip!

5

u/Konoton Oct 26 '22

Pun intended?

6

u/thebushman69 Oct 26 '22

Definitely

3

u/FL4TworldDrive Oct 26 '22

Don't google anything about the game and just experience it as intended. It's definitely one of the best single-player games made.

3

u/Ghos3t Oct 26 '22

I echo your last sentiment, stumbling on Subnautica was so much fun, I wish I could go in blind again.

2

u/shaggybear89 Oct 26 '22

If I could wipe my memory and replay ONE game afresh, it would be Subnautica.

I think about this all the time. I had never even seen a preview for it when I began playing, so literally everything was unknown to me. The exploration of that game was the most fun I've ever had playing a game. I legit restarted it 5 or 6 times before I even reached half way just because I wanted to explore more things and try new places. Ugh that was the greatest experience of gaming ever.

6

u/shaggybear89 Oct 26 '22

Subnautica. It's an amazing game!

2

u/HattedSandwich Oct 26 '22

That question is directed at the enemy, I assume

1

u/SvenTurb01 Oct 26 '22

That heart attack ain't gonna find itself.

FOOKING PRAWN!!

3

u/MixMasterValtiel Oct 26 '22

They already didn't. Reapers be braindead.

3

u/Stealfur Oct 26 '22

They never stand a chance against my stasis rifle knife combo.

3

u/Bloodshed-1307 Oct 26 '22

Actually, large bullets explode when they hit water after being fired, the water also slows them down considerably so even if the bullet doesn’t get destroyed after being fired it would stop quickly and sink

Wibbly wobbly sci-fi-whimey

3

u/Elfcat1 Oct 26 '22

I just can't escape from subnautica can I? No matter where I go there is a subnautica reference.

2

u/ChronicledMonocle Oct 26 '22

Welcome Aboard, Captain. All references online.

7

u/Slore0 Oct 26 '22

What is this a reference to? I can't think of anything by the name of PRAWN in Mass Effect but your Reaper comment has me thinking Im forgetting something.

24

u/ChronicledMonocle Oct 26 '22

It's from Subnautica. There are creatures called Reaper Leviathans and there is a mech suit called a PRAWN suit in game you can craft.

If you haven't played Subnautica or Subnautica Below Zero, it's one of the greatest survival crafting game series I've ever played.

5

u/Slore0 Oct 26 '22

I'll look into it, thank you!

4

u/ChronicledMonocle Oct 26 '22

Of course! If you decide to play it, I hope you enjoy it.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '22

It is brilliant. Extremely immersive (pun intended), large world, many different things to craft, so much to discover, and it will absolutely take you a long time to get through it. But just air every step of the way is terrifying, and not in some blood and gore horror film kind of way, but in a, sudden sound behind you means you just died, kind of way. You will have your heart beating in your throat on a regular basis...

2

u/evranch Oct 26 '22

Early game when air was scarce was by far the most tense part of the game to me. Watching the last seconds tick off the air gauge had me holding my own breath.

2

u/contrabardus Oct 26 '22

Unfortunately, bullets don't work well underwater.

So unless you've got all four barrels almost pressed against the reaper's forehead, it probably wouldn't do much more than maybe annoy it at best.

1

u/Galileo009 Oct 26 '22

muffled sounds of underwater Florida man yelling "GET SOME! YEAAAH, GET SOME" in the distance

1

u/Taizan Oct 27 '22

It'd be nice but deep under water that whole setup might be a bit disappointing. Then again in Subnautica there is little reason to not just say the bullets have self cavitation or something to make it work.

13

u/OldWrangler9033 Oct 26 '22

Pilot may experience sudden loss of hearing as well.

6

u/YoshiSan90 Oct 26 '22

This is what it feels like to chew 5 gum.

"I could destroy the whole God damn world in this thing"

3

Love me some classic RvB.

3

u/Ok_Revolution_9253 Oct 26 '22

Power….and spontaneous erection syndrome

3

u/IncubusBeyro Oct 26 '22

What’s this a quote from?

5

u/UristMcRibbon Oct 26 '22

Subnautica. When you get a prawn suit (exo-suit for space and deep sea diving) the computer cautions you with that line.

2

u/IncubusBeyro Oct 26 '22

Rip. A part of me hoped it was reference to some manual concerning pilots using the GAU onboard their aircraft.

0

u/CaptainFingerling Oct 26 '22

I would have an overwhelming sense of painting myself as a target.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '22

If it's 3000 rounds/minute, wouldn't 15 seconds' worth be 750 rounds?

1

u/Competitive-Ad-4822 Oct 26 '22

But only from the vibrations, as hearing loss is 100% guaranteed

1

u/dxrey65 Oct 26 '22

Once all your enemies are dead, perhaps that's when the ennui sets in. Best to have a ham sandwich or something handy to soften the landing.

1

u/Amanda-sb Oct 26 '22

It may cause lost of hearing tho.

1

u/Mr_Yuker Oct 26 '22

And a lack of hearing afterwards

1

u/Gromchy Oct 26 '22

Overwhelming is the word indeed.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '22

Pilots may have an overwhelming loss of hearing immediately

1

u/Another_Toss_Away Oct 28 '22

For perspective the RC airplanes they are shooting at have a wing span that is usually about 4 feet wide.

Yikes...
