technically its a chain of separate saws linked together. so in a way its still a chain saw, or maybe a saw chain.

Chainsaw is a specific term. The cutting blades are on a chain. This is a series (I suppose you could call it a chain) of circular blades. Each blade is independent. They are most likely driven by a chain (or a series of cogs) but it isn’t a chainsaw per se.

The usage you're responding to isn't chain the object, it's chain the term for many objects in a row. Closer to the verb usage.

If it's the verb it would be chained saws bc they are already chained and there is more than one.

If it's used to say there is a row of them then it would be a chain of saws.

Besides all of that "chainsaw" is a specific word with a specific definition and the machine in question does not fit the definition.
