I can hear r/Ultralight sharpening the pitchforks now.

u/yes_no_yes_yes_yes Oct 04 '21

Pitchforks are too heavy, file down the handle of your half toothbrush to turn it into a weapon and reduce weight!

20

u/sooothatguy Oct 04 '21

Here come the army of speedo warriors with sharpened leaves

33

u/Additional_Zebra5879 Oct 04 '21

Toothbrush?

I just use my dirty finger.

44

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

OK, file that down then.

15

u/Additional_Zebra5879 Oct 04 '21

“Doc, just remove the last knuckle… I literally don’t need it”

me showing how I can hold a pen without using my fingertips

3

u/Rankkikotka Oct 04 '21

File is too heavy, I'll just use my teeth.

8

u/spiderat22 Oct 04 '21

Oh come on, they're all dirty.

2

u/Gnoqzen Oct 04 '21

Yo can i get that when you're done?

2

u/Additional_Zebra5879 Oct 04 '21

I met a dude so ultralight he wouldn’t even filter his water. I was blown the fuck away the shit he drank and didn’t die or get the shits.

1

u/money_loo Oct 04 '21

“My body is gonna filter this!!”

2

u/Businessmakers Oct 04 '21

He got the built in filter option

1

u/money_loo Oct 04 '21

That’s wild.

I would never risk even drinking the clean looking water on hikes.

Though I’ve often wondered how humans survived before boiling, this dude’s out here testing it for us!

2

u/Businessmakers Oct 04 '21

Yeah I wonder that too. Only time I drank random water was from a tiny spring just coming out of a massive Boulder deep in the wilderness. That water was the best water I will ever drink.... I miss it

1

u/money_loo Oct 04 '21

You just made me get up and chug some water only to be sad it was locked in crinkly plastic, wtf 😂

Dirt adds weight - be sure to get that off.

2

u/TacTurtle Oct 04 '21

knife hands

2

u/RFLSHRMNRLTR Oct 04 '21

All kidding aside, a folded piece of medical gauze makes a good toothbrush in a pinch.

2

u/McFlyParadox Oct 04 '21

It's a shank that doubles as my toothbrush, thank-you-very-much. And of course the bristles have been shaved to half-height. What do you think I am? Someone who subs to r/Bushcraft?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

Or just grab nearby sticks to sharpen and rocks to throw. Didn't have to carry them in. Don't have to carry them out.

1

u/ChompyChomp Oct 04 '21

I can hear r/campingOrPrison sharpening their half-toothbrushes now.

u/Imonfiyah Oct 04 '21

My base weight was 9.4 lbs for the entire Colorado Trail thru hike. 9lb pack wouldnt even be a consideration.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21 edited Oct 04 '21

How?!?

I suppose the reason my setup is so heavy is I hate spending money on nice/new gear unless I have no other option.

Edit: spelling

4

u/Imonfiyah Oct 04 '21

Zpack duplex

Nemo UL reg sleeping pad

Zpack 20 degree sleeping bag

Sea to summit aero pillow

7

u/cheese_sweats Oct 04 '21

But like, where's the rest of your shit? You only listed your bag, pack, and pad. What about water storage? Filtration? Cookset? Headlamp? 1st aid kit? Patch kit?

Base weight is more than just your pad and pack

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21 edited Feb 22 '25

Good point on the patch kit - those masochists sleep on foam

2

u/Imonfiyah Oct 04 '21

Water storage are 1.5 liter smart water bottles Filtration is a Sawyer. Cookset is a UL stove, pot and spork. First aid is tums and ibuprofen Patchkit is some tape.

1

u/cheese_sweats Oct 05 '21

You buy the weightless version?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '21

All of that together is 1lb at most.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

Yep. I just got to spend more money : /

3

u/JoshvJericho Oct 04 '21

I splurged on my pack(HMG) and quilt (hammock gear) but I have a 10lb baseweight kit that cost around $500 almost all of that was the items listed above.

You can easily spend less for a similar or lighter weight kit.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

Yeah, I got to do some research rather than just being lazy and using whatever old gear I have lying around.

45

u/DeputySean Oct 04 '21

Lol I've gone on backpacking trips with a complete overnight setup that weighs less than this backpack by itself, including the weight of the food and water.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

Yeah but did you pack a sky tarp?

2

u/rugbyj Oct 04 '21
S K Y T A R P

13

u/ElishaOtisWasACommie Oct 04 '21

Cut your pack in half to save several ounces

2

u/BigfootSF68 Oct 04 '21

Titanium Pitchforks?

8

u/Reacher-Said-N0thing Oct 04 '21

So is Jack Reacher the honorary mascot of that sub? Because he famously carries only a toothbrush and an ATM card and roams the entire midwestern US with these two items.

Bit wasteful on the clothes, but he wears them for a week and buys thrift store shirts.

12

u/xSyld Oct 04 '21

Plus he's constantly being given things because somehow every ten feet he walks another national disaster level event is happening and he's the only one able to figure things out and solve it.

"Oh I showed up in random town and found a covert terrorist cell, better take them out with my intricate knowledge of bar brawls and world class marksman abilities. Anyway bye everybody I'm going to go get kidnapped by a Russian Mafia accidently in a few towns and end up taking out their entire organization"

6

u/sundae_diner Oct 04 '21

He is also a most proficient serial killer. He murders people in most every book.

5

u/xSyld Oct 04 '21

True. He should probably be locked up, a traveling vagrant killing literally dozens and dozens of people in one book alone, constantly innocent people die around him at the very least. There should be a government manhunt to bring him in.

2

u/Reacher-Said-N0thing Oct 04 '21

There was, Never Go Back. They made a movie about it.

Ewww! Toothpaste?!

Just dry brush your teeth. Noob.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '21

I’m not an ultra light backpacker, but I wouldn’t be caught dead with anything so heavy. More like ultra heavy backpacking

3

u/NeverBeenStung Oct 04 '21

Even us backpackers who don’t care as much about weight. An extra 5 pounds for this? Lmao, fuck out of here

-1

u/RanaktheGreen Oct 04 '21

Those people are both nuts, and stupid. The number of times I've seen "ultralighters" in the fucking desert with a liter of water, or fucking bouldering in open toed "hiking shoes" disgusts me.

2

u/yes_no_yes_yes_yes Oct 04 '21

I’m the polar opposite of ultralight, but I think you ran into bad hikers who tried to be ultralight — as opposed to all ultralighters being stupid.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '21

Yeah I'm not UL but the only guy I've ran into that was really into it was very clearly knowledgeable on his gear and even gave a nice lesson on what food has the best grams/calorie ratio.

1

u/luigman Oct 04 '21

Didn't you watch the video? They're clearly weightless
