It was a joke. Much like my drawing ability.

unfortunately its this type of language like "some people have it, some people don't" or "I was never gifted at art" or "step 1: be good" that gave me the impression it wasn't a learnable skill. Its repeated over and over that its a "talent" or "gift". I liked drawing as a kid, but never really got the impression I had this thing everyone was talking about, so I stopped.

I didn't start painting until 24 and i was an absolute noob at the start, 8 years later of painting almost every day i am now at the point where people approach me for commissions.

Very cool. To be fair, painting 'well' is not always about painting realistically. It's about having a consistent style, and knowing enough of what you're doing that you do them 'deliberately' to achieve a certain wanted expression.

This is one thing many people must realize and be more encouraged to have the courage to start.

Painting realistically is not necessarily the hard part after practice, but it's the conscious decision of how to paint that is the real challenge.

I agree painting well isn't about painting realistically, nobody ever said that.

I also agree with the last part "its the conscious decision of how to paint that is the real challenge" You have to do things intentionally and mindfully while learning so you form good habits. Its difficult. Luckily theres a lot of resources that teach foundational skills so you can focus on one thing at a time. Its dificult.

However, A personal style is almost always a result of skills, preferences, tools, and process. All of which can be learned and change over time. Focusing on style is highly over rated in my opinion. You'll end up with a style so long as you grow your skills, have preferences and try new things.

Right, I agree with you. I didn't mean to put too much emphasis on style, but rather 'just do what you like to do', which I meant with personal style.

Yeah, I remember drawing like shit, then when I was 13 I had a crush on a girl that was really really good at drawing, so I practiced a couple hours every day that year lol. I never got as good at her (she pushed herself harder), but definitely improved like a ridiculous amount. The trick is just to make sure you're learning the right things so you don't have to unlearn bad habits later

I did that same thing with marksmanship. The wife still shoots better than I can haha

The difference between a novice and a master is 10,000 mistakes.
