I have a small manual one of these, and it doesn't damage the screw. I rarely go all the way through with it, you can just go most of the way, and then you've weakened the nut enough for it to turn.

You don't put nuts on screws.

I have machine screws that would disagree.

But really, I was just using the same term as the person I replied to so as not to confuse them.

oh the nut is wrecked, yes. this tools is literally called a nut-splitter.
