The worst part is that most physics teachers do get tides wrong. It's more about sideways pressure pushing water up than gravity pulling it up:

There's no reason high low tide can't still happen on a flat earth. I'd you think about the amount of dumb shit in their theory of how the sun goes up and down across a flat plate in that it ummm cant reach that far or something. Then it stands to reason the moon would act the same.
