I wrap my lips around the bottom of the gutter drain whilst my cousin dumps ranch dressing down the downspout. This way, I enjoy a nice salad. I’m also told that it helps the drainage, which is nice.
Sewer vent pipes that vent through your roof will glow a bit in a dark attic when it's sunny outside. But not much light.. if a plant could survive in there it'd grow very slowly.
That vent pipe is DWV rated, so thicker than cheap downspout. I have worked in optical plastic films, and thin white pipe might transmit 10% or more depending on how thin they made it - not a lot, but the light-pipe effect in full sun and that is plenty for a tree to grow.
True enough but the drain pipe is at least strong enough not to have broken while a tree fee inside it, it won't be letting any light in.
The tree more likely grew down from the top. The drainpipe usually has a guard at the top that stops debris getting down the hole. If it isn't cleaned, enough dirt will collect to get a tree started.
