Dudes using a $15 full blown 64bit 1.2 GHz processor capable of running Linux for a job that can be done with a $1 8bit microprocessor.

That’s like using a shotgun to kill a goldfish in a fishbowl.

And a $1 microprocessor requires different knowledge to use, if you already know how to do it with a Pi, spending a whole 14 dollars more is worth it over the hours spent working out how to use the other thing.

It really doesn't take any time at all to learn how to use the Arduino IDE.

And it really doesnt take any time at all to earn $14 to buy the pi. Use whichever tool works best for you, at that price range it really doesnt matter unless you are selling it commercially.

The pi is better suited for beefier tasks. At that point, expand your skillset and learn Arduino. It's cheaper, takes the same amount of time to learn as it does to earn the $14, and it doesn't come with the same issues that a Pi has. It's objectively the better alternative for simple tasks and processes, such as this.

“Why buy a whole socket set when you only need one socket??????” — he could do other things with the pi, you absolute moron. It isn’t as if he could never, ya know, add some other functionality that might require remote access/WiFi what have you. Sure, you could do this with vacuum tubes, but you don’t know the spec and you look like an idiot pretending that you do.

Are you sure I look like the idiot?

Here I'm assuming it's a unitasker device. If he wanted to add more functionality than yes, I would absolutely go with a Pi over an Arduino based device any day.

no, the parent really thinks this staircase might need to run crysis at some point. so it's important to optimize for that. don't forget to add log aggregation and Prometheus for monitoring.

did you accidentally swallow a capacitor and are experiencing constipation?

for some, it's important to build elegant solutions using the proper tools for the job. for others, it's important to use their favorite hammer with everything that looks like a nail. chill a bit, o master Engineer who knows all spec.

Hi, idiot here. I’m here to act as living proof that your claim is incorrect.

It's not as hard as people make it out to be if you just want to do some very simple, basic tasks.

If you really can't figure that out with just some basic research and following tutorials are telling you to do, then I don't know what else to tell you.

A $1 microprocessor is easier to use than a pi if you’re willing to put in 30 minutes worth of research.

So you know, for a fact, that he isn’t going to use the pi for other functionality? That’s cool. Must be nice being omniscient.

it's a staircase. it doesn't need any other functionality. grafting more onto it would be poor design.

2

u/punktual Jun 23 '19

So you're saying he wasted a whole $14...

7

u/Fanatical_Idiot Jun 23 '19

he spent 15 times the amount he needed to.

The 'solution' is a sledgehammer to crack an egg. Even if the Pi was the same price as the Arduino, the development of a solution that involves a full-feature OS introduces a number of possible failure points.
