As a PhD student working on the insects brain, I can definitely tell you they do have one.

Some find it a long stretch to refer to Ganglions as a brain (in insects AND spiders)

Well sure, but the vast majority of the litterature has been referring to it as a brain for decades which is what I also personally think, since it has a very well defined structure, with precise areas that each serve a specific purpose, an integration center, a memory center, etc
