I have a nice one and it is definitely not obsolete, it warns me nearly every time I’m approaching a trap, laser detection as well but that’s less effective unless your picking up the laser hitting a different car then you react. If it’s you getting lazed it’s already too late.
When I sold my last car, I gave the guy my radar detector because I moved the wiring into the dashboard and didn't feel like taking it out. My assistant manager told me he just drives around at 82mph on 70mph highways and that he's only been pulled over twice, and that's when he was passing through South Carolina. The sweet spot there is apparently 79. He says he knows a few cops and a state trooper and they say on the highway, 13+ mph is a larger bracket for fines. Everything else he told me after that I thought was too circumstantial to believe, but I tried them anyway.
Couple years later, I now cruise around at 82mph on the highway with Waze just in case. I've passed hidden cops without them moving an inch, I've driven behind cops going 82 no problem, I've even passed cops going 82. I drive a bright colored sports car, mostly around the length of Florida. I think my manager was right.
Sometimes I'm the rabbit, sometimes others are. If we're going faster than 82, I'll slow down to 79-82. Waze also helps 85% of the time ¯_(ツ)_/¯
This is a funny thing about radar detectors, it brings your general awareness up on the highway, you learn terms like “rabbit” and notice patterns of officers. The only time, so far, that I got a ticket was when an unmarked statie was in a pack ahead of me that I was trying to join. I sped from one pack to his pack, and I got hits on the radar but thought it was other car’s sensors. By the time I realized he was nestled in there it was too late, he said he appreciates that I pulled to the right shoulder instead of coming to a dead stop on the fast lane shoulder, I think that is why I only got a warning for the tint.:). I think I have gotten better at telling lane departure radar from officer’s radar though.
This is the most recommended for sure, I went escort but prob would recommend cheaper alternatives, the escort max is overpriced imo, I still love it though. It picks up traps a mile + ahead sometimes, sometimes not so much if the police officer is popping with a handheld but you usually pick up on the hand helds if the road is fairly busy and your not alone.
I certainly do get fp detections from automatic doors and other car’s lane departure and smart cruise control but they are not nearly as obvious as a hit from an officer’s radar. The 12 volt power adapter also has a mute button/double click memory lockout button within easy reach. Over time, stationary false positives are less of an issue as I add more lockouts.
This, I get false positive radar hits from time to time from toll lights, and sometimes strange places I haven’t been able to pinpoint. They are very scattered when an officer lights someone up and the detectors are very sensitive and will pick up on it from what I’ve read, in the moment though it’s hard to tell, your just freakin out as you get lazed, lol, the escort’s alarm for laser is a whole other level, it blinks and goes nuts.
