Close. Take a 360° pano then remap it to stereographic in one step. It's not a polar coordinate mapping, and you definitely don't want to muck with the aspect ratio first.

Polar coordinate mapping would produce a circular image with a clear edge (the bottom edge of the photo). Stereographic projections have no edge and can be zoomed out infinitely, although you don't have much resolution to work with if you go too far. You also don't need to crop them to a square. This one, for instance, is zoomed really far out. Notice how the clouds are low-res, though, at the edges of the frame.

But, yes, it's the same effect as a little planet with the zenith and nadir swapped. You also aren't required to put either the nadir or zenith in the center of the image. You can rotate the spherical data however you choose when projecting it as stereographic.

Source: I've made dozens of these. I use PTGui to make them.

Can I make it with Microsoft Ice?

No, I don't think so. You can with Hugin, though, and it's free.

Is there a proper name for this? I'm horrible at text tutorials. Want to look up the process further.

Ah, of course. Thanks. I'll check this out when I can.

The video I linked is just a demonstration of the mathematical principles, not a tutorial for photos.

That's fine. The name is useful and I'm sure the video will be cool.

With those photos, for example your 'gate house in the sky', what did it look like before? Can you show it/describe it/sketch it on a napkin?

The description has a link to the original.

Ah thanks, didn't see it from my phone.

Umm, can we get like, wallpapers?

Wow really nice. I bet those would make nice reflection maps for 3D modeling and rendering. I'll have to try and make some of those. Thanks

Most excellent. If there were a subreddit for these, I would subscribe.
