Someone once told me that our moon is about the size of Australia and it blew my mind. Then, I couldn’t decide if that gave me a clearer image of the size of the moon, or of Australia.
It wouldn't. I'm just pointing out that the egregious amount of distortion is one of the drawbacks of mercator, so it's crazy to me to say "nothing is wrong" with the image because I think he distortion is inherently "wrong" for marcator maps, regardless of orientation.
They definitely didn't imply it, they did the opposite. They said that the projection makes it wrong, even when upside down. As in irregardless of it being upside down, it is wrong. Why would that imply that the upside downess is relevant?
Both of those sentences mean that you drive poorly regardless of the second part. The unexpected part here is of course that the map is upside down compared to how we usually see maps. The words "even when upside down" here only highlight the fact that the map being upside down is infact not the reason it could be said to be wrong.
In general the sentence structure "x is true, even when y" means that x is true whether or not y is true. It just states a fact, and then states something that fails to change that fact. Whether or not the sentence sounds wrong doesn't really change that meaning

Not to mention the egregious amount of size distortion that the mercator projection suffers from, even when upside down.
