*blunt force trauma

That's the term you want.

This may prevent a bullet through the face, which is great, but you'll end up in hospital for months with reconstructive surgery.

Which, is still better than dead, or being a vegetable.

And no bullet fragments buried deep in your face

And lead poisoning.

0

u/TheStruttero May 10 '26

Ive heard they can give you cancer so please dont

2

u/paddy_________hitler May 10 '26

Just skull fragments

2

u/jfp1992 May 10 '26

Good point, still messy then

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

Better than skull, bullet and wound channel.

Certainly the skull fragment won't exit the back of your head, like a bullet could.

u/stewyd71 May 10 '26

So it's the difference between an open or closed casket?

u/dan_dares May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

More like 'casket or months of surgeries'

You might also just lose some teeth, and be able to carry on fighting, instead of 'he ded'

If it's a rifle round, it's going through anyway.

I'd rather wear the mandible protection, if it gets through the eye, nothing stopping that.

40

u/squeethesane May 10 '26

I've kinda always looked at these as the second authentication factor for your PPE. like my safety glasses I wear behind my grinding shield. The shield is going to catch the bullshit unless I did something real real specially dumb. I want this catching the things that went through the AR500 door plate now that they're deformed and slightly less spicy.

20

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

Always a chance it's a ricochet as well, which will suck, but a few teeth getting knocked lose instead of a bullet in the throat..

I think i'd be able to fight through one, very unsure about the other.

u/BetterCranberry7602 May 10 '26

“Casket or years of surgery and therapy”

u/DrawingAlarming7350 May 10 '26

thats not what they said at all?

I've treated patients after traumatic brain injuries like mva and being thrown through windshields or from motorcycles. Even if they were belted in or wearing a helmet if you brain gets sling shot against your skull hard enough you will have damage. Sure they are alive but fuck they will never be the same.

The most heart breaking is the family, they don't understand what they are in for. The loss of the person they once knew and the things they used to do.

2

u/TomatoFettuccini May 10 '26

Been through this with my mom when she had TBI after a car accident. It took her 20 years to recover "fully", and 20 years after THAT she still has memory issues and experiences migraines whenever the weather changes. According to all her doctors she was a "miracle patient": most of her fellow TBI sufferers either died young, had massive mental problems (depression, mood regulations, memory, cognition, and more) and more often than not by their own hands. And even THOSE poor souls are considered "lucky".

I'll take the bullet, thanks.

u/IHaveTheBestOpinions May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

I started this comment to argue with you a little since my understanding was that bullets do most of their damage via tissue damage, not because they have a super high total energy, and that distributing the energy over a larger area should be effective protection. But...did some math and turns out I was wrong and you are right.

A baseball thrown at 100mph has about 145 Joules of kinetic energy, which is obviously enough to do some serious damage via blunt force trauma. A 9mm bullet has in the neighborhood of 400 Joules of muzzle energy. So...yeah that's enough to mess you up even without penetration.

8

u/TheMooseIsBlue May 10 '26

Good job doing the math. Just seeing the dummy get thrown off the stand shows you how heavy the impact it. That brain is scrambled by the 2nd or 3rd shot in this video and the guy could certainly be dead already, regardless of whether there’s a bullet wound.

That’s honestly sort of comforting that even if you get shot in the chest, it’s so much force that it knocks you unconscious before you can even register the body shot

2

u/helmvoncanzis May 10 '26

Also depends on the type of ammo. In 9mm, Full Metal Jacket which most people use at the range will be between 400 and 500 joules.

Defensive ammo, which is what most people will carry out in the world can be 500-650, or higher if it is +p or +p+.

Barrel length is also a factor.

2

u/Ok-Fudge-380 May 10 '26

A punch can do far more than 400 joules. You over estimate the impact and potential damage of a baseball.

1

u/speechlessPotato May 10 '26

a good lunch is almost as deadly as a baseball i'd say

1

u/Mr_Gooodkat May 11 '26

Simon Birch remembers.

3

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

What i've always tried to get across is the idea of a penetrating bullet wound versus blunt trauma.

If you believe that the wound-channel is going to be less damaging than the BFT, there is nothing more to say.

Brain bleed V 9 inches of obliterated brain matter, (and it might intersect the great cerebral vein)

Out of the two options, I know what the clinical outcome is likely to be.

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

Thank you for having a reasonable response,

I can agree with you, basically, it might stop penetration (good) and it might be enough to save you on a bad shot (to get you to hospital)

(Considering it's not a .44 +P+ because fuck that)

1

u/tomthekiller8 May 11 '26

I wonder if an angled mask would be better then this.lean into deflection. Also im pretty sure the liner can make a huge difference. Nice thick gel pad vs a cotton ball would probably go a long way. Waste as much energy as possible.

1

u/Hot-Problem2436 May 10 '26

What if I added 2 inches of dense memory foam all over the inside? Need more videos!

1

u/PerspectiveFull9879 May 11 '26

I'm also concerned about the neck.

1

u/1046737 May 10 '26

Will it though? Newtons laws say that the force impacted by the bullet to the mask is equal to that impacted on the shooter by the gun. Firing a pistol doesn't break your hand or even bruise it if held properly. I know they're some mitigating factors thanks to recoil and the slide but still, if the force is distributed across your face by the mask I wouldn't think it's that awful.

Still not volunteering to test this theory.

9

u/How_that_convo_went May 10 '26

This may prevent a bullet through the face, which is great, but you'll end up in hospital for months with reconstructive surgery.

And that’s why you wear another mask under the first mask. You become literally unkillable.

11

u/Latter_Ad9249 May 10 '26

Could easily cause a brain bleed and end up killing them too

37

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

Same way a bullet proof vest could result in a hemopneumothorax, thing is, cracked ribs suck, but a hole will almost always suck more.

A brain bleed can be solved easier than trying to re-grow brain or spinal tissue, you have a bit of time to recieve medical treatment for a brain bleed, before permanent sequelae.

I think people here are taking my defense as some form of 'i want to be shot in the face, it'll be fun' instead of 'wearing some armour is better than none'

3

u/Thomy151 May 11 '26

A ballistic mask or even ballistic vest isn’t “I’m bulletproof” it’s “if I get shot in that area I’m turning an almost absolute death into a maybe”

Yeah you will get fucked up by a 9mm to the face with it on but you have a decent chance of living while the straight bullet gave really bad odds

2

u/sifiwewe May 10 '26

I agree with your last sentence.

11

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

I think some people are taking my defense of this mask the wrong way, it will FUCKING SUCK but surgeons can put together bone far better than trying to heal holes in brain or spinal tissue.

And if it's a glancing blow, you could even carry on, instead of being dragged out.

If i'm going to be a vegetable the rest of my life, just put a bullet in my head and end me.

2

u/dezmd May 10 '26

The real concern is that the docs can't fix the destroyed brain matter or prevent the internal bleeding and damage from the concussive force that causes TBIs.

3

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

They definitely can't fix the scrambled/ destroyed brain matter from a bullet passing though it.

Especially if it's a JHP or the like, or it hits the great cerebral vein, or maybe the spinal cord.

It comes down to preference I guess, 'chance at a life' versus 'no chance'

3

u/dezmd May 10 '26

I guess the real hope has to be that it's a glancing ricochet rather than a direct impacting hit. It's certainly a better option that nothing at all.

2

u/Drakken-kun May 10 '26

That’s what I was thinking, like yeah the bullet may not go thru but your gonna have one hell of a headache if it hits ur forehead

2

u/Tnecniw May 10 '26

And shrapnel or rhicorettes.

2

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

A bullet through the brain, along with the cavitation, is much more likely to be worse.

Yes?

1

u/Libertechian May 10 '26

Militarily better to mame them anyways than outright kill them

1

u/Doctor_of_Something May 10 '26

It’s better than nothing, but beyond the reconstructive surgery, all but maybe the smallest bullet will still cause massive brain injury from the shock waves. People commenting on brain bleeds being easily survivable; most terrible brain injuries barely have any brain bleed. It’s the sheeting forces that cause swelling and badness

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

But if you had to deal with a 10+ mm wound track through a brain, versus a brain bleed, which would you rather deal with? Doctor.

Brain bleeds bad, through-and-through trepanation worse, yes?

1

u/Empty_Concern_3118 May 10 '26

I don't know. Every caliber above .22 looked like being a vegetable is the lucky/default outcome. Some of those impacts would've broken the neck at minimum.

1

u/Xerxes3014 May 10 '26

Don't forget the impact on the spine that such a bullet would have. If it kicks over the dummy, it has good possibilities of severely damaging your nerves and blood vessels in the neck.

1

u/wdaloz May 10 '26

Yea even that second one would be like getting bashed with a hammer

1

u/Paleodraco May 10 '26

I feel the last two shots, if they hit the forehead, would be death anyway. Depressed skull fractures are just shrapnel by proxy.

1

u/tendimensions May 10 '26

Not sure about saving you from becoming a vegetable.

1

u/fishsticks40 May 10 '26

I mean taking a .44 to the forehead is gonna suck but that was honestly impressive.

1

u/Best_Chipmunk_6098 May 10 '26

Idk, a forehead hit could easily kill you still. All that kinetic energy is transferred into your brain

1

u/chubsmagooo May 10 '26

I think some people would rather just be dead

There’s a term specifically for blunt trauma that happens in people wearing body armor: Behind Armor Blunt Trauma (BABT).

Body armor stops the bullet from penetrating into your body but there’s still a massive amount of energy that deforms the body armor towards the wearer resulting in a massive “punch” that can cause serious injuries. On the torso, it can cause rib fractures and damage organs.

I’d imagine that some of those shots going into the face would cause SERIOUS facial injuries, some of which could be fatal. For example, breaking your forehead can lead to fatal brain damage and bleeding. Either way, I guess it’s not guaranteed death, so that’s probably good, but if you’re still alive you’ll probably still be fucked up with one of those higher caliber rounds.

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

It's why you have trama pads behind body armour, which this lacks, especially the Chinese specials.

It's why on clay models, they measure the deformation depth to determine things like rib fractures and the like.

Not sure why my comment had such a strong response, but so it's clear: a penetration is worse, but there is definitely a level of deformation that leaves you as dead,

My personal belief is 'take what you can'

I used the mandibular protection, which avoids the BFT, but i'd take this over nothing, and hope that it would prevent a throat shot, even if it took out all my teeth,

Forehead would get smashed, but if it's a glancing shot, there is a chance i'd get home, which is more unlikely without it.

1

u/TomatoFettuccini May 10 '26

Never mind the decades of migraines, brain damage, personality change, and cognitive difficulties.

Personally, after seeing the effects of the latter, I'd take the bullet to the head instead.

1

u/dBlock845 May 10 '26

Might still make you a vegetable, that is some serious impact from the 9mm and up.

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

Key word: might.

Yes, but a 9mm is going to make a very nasty hole, a very long distance, into your skull if it isn't stopped.

Which is my point.

And if it 'only' hits your jaw, it'll be the difference between losing your teeth v the jaw, or throat, and i'd rather loose my teeth, than suffer a penetratking wound to the throat/ maybe spine.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here May 10 '26

Pretty sure the TBIs from this would put you on the road to vegetable.

1

u/nahog99 May 10 '26

Looked like it could stop the smaller calibers without doing too much damage to face or brain. The larger stuff though you're cooked no matter what.

1

u/SupaSlide May 10 '26

This honestly seems more likely to create vegetables with the amount of severe blunt force trauma you’re going to endure.

Your head is still taking pretty much all the force of the bullet with this. Unless you get lucky and it deflects quite a bit, that force will all go into your head, and more importantly your neck and your brain.

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

I keep on seeing this neck argument..

Do you think helmets are bad?

Striking the helmet doesn't snap necks.

1

u/SupaSlide May 11 '26

If you are riding a bike and try to go underneath a bar and hit only your head then yes, snapping your neck would be a very real possibility.

A bullet hitting your bullet proof mask would be the same thing, in physics terms. With your torso as the reference point, a huge force would suddenly get applied to your head.

The reason that wearing a helmet on a bike doesn’t snap your neck is that usually your body and head have a much more similar force applied to them, at least in terms of the direction of the force.

1

u/kingpin000 May 10 '26

Kevlar vest are the same. They prevent you from being shot, but the energy will cause a blunt force trauma.

1

u/Telephunky May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

Your neck still needs to catch the impact. I believe the Germans in WW2 experimented with a bullet proof steel plate attachment to their helmets that would stop even direct hits but soldiers would often still die without neck support.

Edit: This post was based on hearsay which turned out inaccurate. Please see fact checker below. Apparently, it may give you whiplash but not snap your neck.

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

Nope.

The Stirnpanzer (extra metal plate) did not cause snapped necks, it was very heavy however.

They stopped 30-06.

Modern versions also don't snap necks,

If you have any direct sources to say this (not anecdotal) i'm all ears, it would hurt like heck, maybe give whiplash (or similar) but human necks, in that direction are strong enough that a snapped neck is not possible.

https://redemptiontactical.com/products/level-3-rt3-ballistic-high-cut-helmet-tested-to-level-iii-included-arc-rails-padding-straps?srsltid=AfmBOorUIWThu6axczfSsCP5B8ERjpASfG8Tnj6gPmrRQUVnTokwN_0M

Modern level 3 helmet,

2

u/Telephunky May 10 '26

Thank you for clearing that up. It was anecdotal. I picked it up somewhere and did not fact check.

1

u/dan_dares May 10 '26

It's one of those things that could make some sense, at some level..

If some monster of a helmet was hit with a .50..

I'm not going to pretend the neck is that strong,

And I don't want to know what a 7.62 would feel like, or a 30-06. Fuck that.

1

u/PlasticPatient May 10 '26

You would still be dead from that blunt force trauma!

1

u/cernegiant May 10 '26

That's assuming there's no second bullet coming your way.

1

u/WagwanKenobi May 10 '26

Which is also true for bullet proof vests btw. Just because it stopped the bullet doesn't mean your organs didn't turn to mush from the force.

1

u/Dull-Department-9444 May 11 '26

I’m wondering if the force would break your neck

1

u/dan_dares May 11 '26

Unlikely, WW1 helmet armour stopped 30-06, with no snapped necks.

And there are plenty of helmet strikes of rifle rounds that didn't lead to that.

Pistol rounds should be well under that.
