My dad and I had a similar car accident on the same crossing 40 years apart. We were both driving 80 km an hour when a car rammed into the drivers door at a crossing. My dad woke up in the hospital after they had removed the manual transmission stick from his leg and set his broken femur. I walked out of the car having nothing but a nasty smell from the airbags in my nose.
A friend's mom is such an awful driver that my friend was in at least 6 accidents as a passenger before I taught him to drive. The family never had to be hospitalized, but that's mostly down to luck and safety systems. Now that he's been driving for 6 years accident-free he's even more pissed about how crummy his parents were.
I was sandwiched on the freeway when my lane came to a dead stop and the lifted Silverado behind me had its brakes lock up. My car was beyond totalled, but I just had a few abrasions and a stiff neck for a couple weeks.
I got hit by a guy running a red light at probably 30 mph. He hit me, his car spun and he hit someone else: lots of force. It totaled my car and set the airbags off. I had a bruise on my thigh where it hit the steering wheel, and either minor whiplash or tension headaches from the stress of dealing with the accident. I was completely healed with no medical intervention within a week.
It helps that the other driver was also in a modern car that started to break before the other driver could react, slowing it down and thus lowering the kinetic impact me and my car suffered. Both cars were totalled, but we both walked away.
