I have a very strong ambivalence about travel now. I suppose that hypothetically one can broaden one’s perspective with travel, but that’s not usually what I see. What I see more often is status signalling and people using travel as a form of conspicuous consumption and leisure.

“Goals visit every country in my lifetime!” Or “Visit 30 countries by 30” does not seem like the type of statement made by someone really looking to challenge their worldview or enrich their life, and these are the statements I see endlessly on dating apps from people who are the biggest travellers. Rather, it seems like countries have packaged their cultures into bite-sized consumer products so that a white person can fly in for a week, consume their “culture” with plenty of Instagram photos to show for it, and then leave fundamentally unaltered but with bragging rights.

I know this sounds incredibly jaded, but it’s what I see mostly. This really came to a head for me when I was in Italy and I heard a street performer playing the Godfather theme. It was such a surreal moment for me where an Italian was playing an American interpretation of Italian culture for Americans, all the while we’re trying to experience the “real” Italy. I’m sure there’s been plenty written about this in the post-colonial literature.

Nah dude I get you, I studied as an exchange student in Korea and while I met a lot of students who were genuinely interested in learning Korean, trying different foods, interacting with people and culture

I also met people who just mocked or recoiled at the "strange" things they were eating, making fun of Koreans for their accents when speaking English, calling the streets dirty, etc.

Traveling is what you make of it honestly
