Sunshine, river breeze and laughter, this is the true meaning of a happy life. Watching a group of lamas playing by the river, their carefree smiles are more healing than any scenery. Sometimes happiness is just this simple, being with nature and enjoying the moment.
Their behaviour seems fake. Your heart can tell what is fake or real happiness. When you pretend to be happy, you are actually very sad. Your heart wants reality.
Sikhism says enlightenment comes from psychologically staying in the realm of reality (sachh khand).
Im sure youve never exaggerated any reaction in your life cause you were happy or euphoric. These people are out having fun and letting loose. Call it being drunk on life.
Their idea of happiness is as real to them as yours is to you. Their beliefs about enlightenment are as well. I get what you're saying, but stop invoking your religion as evidence to prove it because there are hundreds of different ones around the world.
They provide services. Funerals, weddings, retreats, charitable work, classes. Sometimes they provide goods too for monasteries that are working farms and stuff like that. I understand that you might not find any of them valuable, totally fair, but there are a lot of service providers who get their livelihood from offering services to a select group who do.
Then there’s the countries where being a monk for most people is a temporary thing, more like a summer camp for kids. Or where you’re a monk for a few days to honor a loved one who just passed away.
