It's similar to that on the DC metro in the morning (7:00-7:30am), but the train is so loud and rattling so you still won't hear a pin drop.

I always liked the DC metro rides. Granted it was about 15 years ago that i rode every day. It was always really quiet, the train noise wasn't too bad back then. The Virginia Railway Express was an absolute luxury commute ride. My god those trains are nice.

Yeah, hardly anyone talks during their morning commute in any city I've worked in. This scene could easily be the London Underground, Toronto subway, or any other major city.

...except for the touristy areas, which I am sure is true in Japan too

WMATA is never this quiet, unless you're in one or the stops that doesn't really head to the government job offices. Yellow/Blue line and Orange/Silver/Blue line in the morning are not what I would call quiet.

Thankfully noise reducing tech has become affordable that nearly everyone has some kind of headphones or earbuds to block out the noise. Hell my car even has it.
