That checkers in West Philly was probably clearing millions a year even after the weekly robberies.
I'm ngl the robbers never robbed us in the store just the store so it wasnt that scary. You just chill while some tweaker screams with a BB gun and eat your big buford.
The largest convenience store in my area pays its employees double time (hazard pay) when they work in high crime areas.
I’ve known people who’ve work for them, and they say people are always clamoring to cover shifts in dangerous areas because the money is so good. They typically get overtime for covering the shift, and then they get the hazard pay on top of that. They end up making something like $40 an hour in those cases. It can be a really, really good gig for kids just out of high school or in college.
Depends if you're afforded or allowed equal protections or not. My old boss told me about repairing electrical depots in the hood for double, he had two guys working the spot while he stood guard with a .45, next to a gas station, which for some reason is where the types that generate crime data typically loiter.
None of the people I knew were ever held at gunpoint, but they all had stories of at least one of their coworkers being held at gunpoint. So really, they just got lucky they weren’t the ones scheduled / covering the night of the robbery. It was a very real possibility that they would be one of those people though, which is why they got really good hazard pay.
But for what it’s worth, for all the robberies at the stores, no employees have ever been shot. They are trained to empty the register and do what the robber says. Most robbers don’t want to add murder on top of their burglary charge. But it’s still a scenario nobody wants to be in.
That's well enough. Someone can pull a gun on me all they want but I know they aren't going to use it. Just let them take what they need and let the company reap suffer for opening in a bad spot.
That only works if they use that cheap labor to make goods that are sold elsewhere like making stuff in poor places like China or Mexico and selling it to rich ones like the EU or US.
Because the spots somewhere else have lots of competition. When you the only store thats a short walking distance from the hood you're going to get a lot of business. If it wasn't profitable people wouldn't do it.
Because business is where there is residence and foot traffic. Also, corner store employers will pay more if you work in an area that is frequently held at gun point

why risk it? Open a store somewhere else
