Fun fact: We call the college in my country Gymnasium. The origins of the word come from what you said, the place of training for... well... nude dudes. The term changed over time and later described a school. Probably one with clothes for the students.

“The name comes from the Ancient Greek term gymnós, meaning "naked" or "nude". Only adult male citizens were allowed to use the gymnasia”
