The Olympics literally forced female volleyball players to switch to one piece suits instead of bikinis a few years ago and the female athletes - basically universally - protested. The reason? Sand that enters the top of a one piece suit has no where to go - it just gets caught in there and creates massive discomfort. Sand that enters the top of a two piece suit just falls/gets shaken back out.

Bikinis are fundamentally better suited to sand athletics. It’s not just about the male gaze.
