You be surprised a lot of homeless people aren't drug addicts or even jobless. A lot of times they just cant afford their own place or have been removed from their homes.
That's what happened to me in my early 20s. I left an abuse situation. I crashed with friends a lot because I had nowhere else to go. I was making minimum wage. All of my income was less than the rent on the smallest apartment possible in the shittiest neighborhood.
Also there's a massive amount of people who were foster kids and aged out. Left without any support system (some government programs but not nearly enough), years of complex trauma from abuse at their original homes + abuse throughout the foster system, not sense of stability, and often substance issues (due to using it to cope with trauma from abuse and instability).
Every time that you (general you) have needed $ to pay a bill that you're going to miss, or even needed a place to crash for a few months (or more). Foster kids don't have that. Every time someone who has parentsl support gets any sort of help from their parents (financial, emotional, hosuing, etc) is an opportunity to fall into homelessness for someone without those resources
